Spoiler alert - characters in novels should beware confiding in coma patients!
In crime fiction patients typically ‘wake up’ miraculously months later able to report everything you told them about a murder while they were unconscious.

Lovely event with independent bookshop, Griffin books
- talk by Oyinkan Braithwaite about her intriguing new novel, ‘Cursed Daughters’ & reflections on her earlier book: “My Sister the Serial Killer”.
Hello, I'm a long-term coma patient in a TV drama. I miraculously awake & make full recover apart from some memory loss which means:
- I can't remember my boyfriend so he needs to woo me (Romance)
- I can't remember my attacker so need hypnosis (MurderMystery)

@OpenJusticeCoP @CDOCuk Anyone reading media reports of this case could usefully read the court judgment - just a few pages but more details & very clear explanation for the decision #PDOCMediaWatch

A stereotypical image (young, blond, female, beauty, frozen in time for 4 yrs). Her eyes are open, but completely still & fixed. Reinforces false idea that blinking or roaming eyes must be a sign of consciousness ("Casualty", S22, Ep46) #PDOCMediaWatch
Lots of discussion re @BBCCasualty today re compelling portrayal of Covid crisis. A show with reputation for realism. Just viewed 2008 episode on vegetative state for #PDoCMediaWatch: showed decision challenges & misinterpretation of movements as emotional response but...(1/2)
@KitzingerCelia Anyone reading that should read the judgment from the Court of Appeal. Spot the differences! #PDoCMediaWatch

A pleasure to talk to @ABCaustralia's Rod Quinn today.
A thoughtful interviewer & plenty of space to explore issues. He asked probing questions without being confrontational or interrupting with 'but...." - allowing for (I hope!) an informative discussion #PDOCMediaWatch
Thanks!

Completed the Culture, coma & the media course. Lots to take away, but key points:
Healthcare workers need to understand the perception the public has of coma, MCS, VS resulting from film, TV, the news. 1/4 #PDoCmediawatch

Working through @CDOCuk course on Culture, 'coma' & the media. It's so thought-provoking, especially this link to one man's art representing his sister's journey. #PDoCmediawatch
Revisiting this for #PDoCMediaWatch - a powerful 'graphic novel' account of losing a sister to devastating brain injury, beautifully & powerfully drawn. Few words but capturing such intensity

@blampied_h @CDOCuk Thanks Trish, loved our discussion about what children learn about 'coma' from fairlytales & 'kids TV'. Anyone have other examples to share?
So important to think about support needs of children of parents in long term vegetative states #PDoCMediaWatch

New find for #PDoCMediaWatch course: 'Bad Dream Coma computer game: nightmarish world from which the player must struggle to awake or ‘Neversong: Once Upon a Coma' where you “Help little Peet hack-and-slash his way though a beautifully haunting coma”.
Any other examples for us?

Coupland said long-term comas (vegetative state) inspired him as an author: "I like the notion that comas can allow a person to radically reinvent themselves upon awakening. I think we all want to do that.” Mmm, VS as an opportunity! One issue explored in #PDoCMediaWatch course
