Prior to the invasion and further Russian occupation, Popasna was an important railway hub with direct trains to Kyiv, Kharkiv, and cities in Luhansk and Donetsk oblasts.
The town bordered on the part of Luhansk region occupied in 2014, so active hostilities began here from the first day of the Russian invasion. After three months of fierce fighting, in May 2022, Ukrainian troops were forced to withdraw from Popasna.
During the 32 months of Russian occupation, the town has not been able to live a normal life. The video shows dozens of destroyed residential buildings and pieces of concrete scattered on the streets of Popasna.
The Russian authorities do not care so much that they do not even pretend to restore anything here. This is not the first case and not the last of Russia's barbaric policy. This is the face of modern Russia.

Zwei Jahre Krieg in der #Ukraine weckt die Erinnerung an all die Städte, die ich mit meinem Fotografen und Kameramann @rgarciavilanova besucht habe und die eine nach der anderen von #Russland besetzt wurde. Treffen mit Einheiten bei #Popasna, das die Russen als allererstes in Schutt und Asche schossen. Panzer vor, Schuss, Panzer zurück, nachladen und wieder vor. Die Fahrten nach #Severodonetsk #Lysychansk #Soledar. Oft alleine, aber auch mit einem netten Hauptmann und Bombenentschärfern. Die viele Male in #Bakhmut. Im Evakuierungsbus über Nacht und mit dem jungen Kola, der Bewohner herausholte. Dazu die ziellosen Touren durch die Stadt. Zigarettenpausen mit Soldaten, Feuerwehr im Einsatz und die Tage am Stabilisierungspunkt bei Sanitätern aus Deutschland. Damals konnte man vielfach noch dorthin fahren, wo man eben hinwollte.
Vor einer Woche haben die Russen ihre Flagge in #Avdiivka gehisst. Welcher ukrainische Ort wird der nächste sein, an den man sich so zurückerinnern muss? @welt
