A German company sold a drug to pregnant women in the late 1950s and called it so safe you could not overdose on it. It caused the worst medical disaster of the century. The drug was thalidomide. The company was Grünenthal, in West Germany, and it marketed the pill from 1957 as a gentle sedative, safe for expectant mothers. In Britain a drinks firm, Distillers, sold it as Distaval. The pill was poison to a developing child. Taken in early pregnancy it wrecked the baby's growth, and thousands were born with malformed or missing limbs. More than ten thousand children were affected across the world, and many died at birth. Grünenthal had signals of nerve damage in adults and pressed on regardless. The country it barely touched was the United States, and the reason was one woman. Frances Kelsey, a reviewer at the FDA, refused to approve it despite heavy pressure from the drug company, because she was not satisfied it was safe. She held the line, and America was spared the worst. Britain was not so lucky, and it took a newspaper campaign by the Sunday Times to force proper compensation out of Distillers years later. They swore it was safe for the unborn. One regulator's stubbornness was the only thing standing between the pill and a nation's children.
