@EricLDaugh In 1979, #PROP13 passed OVERWHELMINGLY to hold ever increasing prop tax to 1% of assessed value...teachers then, as they STILL DO, railed against the people's will, warning of schools closures, lost services. Etc...almost 50 years later #CALIFORNIA still hasnt figured it out🤦♀️
Taxpayer WIN!
CA lawmakers + Howard Jarvis deal locks in 2/3 vote to crush local tax grabs.
Enough of the greedy politicians stealing from Californians!

California lawmakers and the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association reached a tentative agreement that could remove the Local Taxpayer Protection Act and ACA 13 from the ballot while preserving the two-thirds vote requirement for future local special taxes.

Grateful to @HJTA for working with #caleg to uphold California's constitutional requirement for a two-thirds vote to pass local special taxes. #Prop13 #HousingPolicy https://t.co/4IBK5hvfIi
I humbly believe you are so WRONG. Across the nation property taxes average 1% of value CA starts out at 1.35% and goes up 2% every year no matter what. The benefits of #prop13 only kick in after 20-30 years of ownership when most people need them. @HJTA @reason Cut spending and it won't matter! @GroverNorquist @TeamSteveHilton
You can make the strong argument that #prop13 in California is among the worst property tax policies in America. 🇺🇸 @MayorOfLA @GavinNewsom @CAgovernor @KarenBassLA
Prop 13 promised to protect homeowners from rising taxes.
What it actually did: locked in big tax breaks for whoever bought earliest, pushed cities to favor malls over housing (better for sales tax revenue), and left renters and newer buyers holding the bill.

How is this different in ideology than the far right #prop13 currently used to assess property tax in California?
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has introduced a long-awaited plan to phase out property taxes for most primary residences in the state, though the proposal would need legislative approval before voters could decide on it in November.
Under the plan, the homestead exemption would rise from the current $50,000 to $250,000, which DeSantis says would wipe out property taxes for roughly 60% of Floridians.
The exemption would later increase to $500,000, extending the tax elimination to an estimated 92% of homeowners.

@NancyMace Absolutely crazed to propose this nonsense. Look at California and how in my view #prop13 has snatched the communal soul from neighborhoods. @NancyMace

Prop 13’s 1% cap rate won in 1978.
Today it’s too high.
Cut it to ¾% or ½% — stop Sacramento waste, refund homeowners & businesses, slow CA’s exodus.
Fiscal discipline is overdue.

In addition people are divested from the actual intertwined meaning of homeownership. This state is so messed up socially and structurally because of #prop13.
In California homeowners largely are living in silos basically hoping to be super capitalist via their homes value increase. Then they want to pass the cost of good police and fire dept onto the poor transitioning daily past their house through sales tax and parking tickets.
@Atomic_Ferret @NilsHeadley @Pete_Monahan_JD Effectively you’re missing the downward market pressure that provides a check on prices running wild. California property outside of beach cities and select affluent areas would be 30 percent or more cheaper without this #prop13 albatross.

Neither should homes it’s insanity. Pay your neighborhood tax bill. We have to stop coddling people. The entire California real estate market is a deck of cards because of #prop13. In my view you really have valuations that with proper taxation might drop 20-25 percent or more. There would be mass exodus because the neighborhoods and homes would have proper downward pressure that results from price based property tax. Compton homes aren’t worth a million dollars with a million dollars inside. PERIOD.
@D09119713 Say thank you to #prop13 homeowners aren’t paying property taxes for good roads or to clear weeds unless they are a new buyer.
If I had to bet what is likely happening is the boomers that had #prop13 and nearly nothing level property tax propped up Oakland home values. But as they die and the next people have to pay real property tax there is no buyer at those price points when you add real full nonprop13 property tax payments.
You may see this collapse in values across California in South Central, Watts, etc in coming years. California home values are a ticking time bomb because they are artificially propped up by boomers that were paying $120 a month for property tax with a home that went from $115k in 1986 to $1.1 million dollars in 2021. School 3/10, Local store a Food 4 Less, neighbors that are also prop 13 high school educated working class. That’s not $1.1 million. #prop13 is a disaster.
Despite having the best weather and close proximity to the #1 job market in America, Oakland is the worst performing housing market in the US. Fueled by the AI boom, SF is the hottest.
Unlike 2012-2019, there is no trickle over as quality of life concerns on Oakland’s crime, schools, dumping, and safety dominate for homebuyers.
Perhaps this is viewed as a win for the activist/anti-gentrification crowd. For existing homeowners and the city’s tax base, it’s a big loss.
If BART shuts down or sees dramatically lower service levels, look out. The Oakland as Brooklyn comparison is on life support, at least for now.
h/t @rohindhar and @NewsLambert for the charts

When you look at the timeline in my opinion they are also trying to make Olympic visitors pay the taxes missing due to #prop13 through onerous administrative speeding tickets. You’ll have all these visitors why not create an artificial driving tax.
So then that pays the neighborhood taxes most Los Angeles homeowners are being artificially allowed to avoid.

yup, this is exactly why CA housing is broken #prop13
Complain about the rates if you want, but it makes very good sense for property tax to be a tax on the value of the property!
Basing it on purchase price would create all kinds of crazy incentives...people who bought a house 30 years ago would be paying property tax on a "$20,000 home" so the entire city budget would be funded by young people edging their way into their first home, which would be insane.
That’s because at this point you really don’t buy a house with labor earnings. You buy it with boomer wealth transfers and policy advantages like #prop13 passing advantage via being #boomerhooked. Or you are going to be struggling to play keep up.
They just kept it quiet and made some pitch about the family house being passed down.
#Prop13 allows the starvation of taxes to the neighborhood. That is transferred to the working class through sales tax, parking tax, speeding taxes. Pay the bill or don’t give us these artificially inflated valuations.
Look there’s a reason California had among the highest sales tax in America. Working class making up for the loss from PROP 13.

If @TomSteyer wants to end #Prop13, it is an even bigger reason to not vote for him than his repellent personality. He wants to pick your pocket after blowing more than $105mm of his own money on a campaign that feeds only his ego.

@Susan_Shelley
The wealthiest property owners in California, including Donald Trump, have avoided paying taxes on what their properties are actually worth.
That's cost our state $243 billion since 2012.
I'm going to close that tax loophole and use the revenue to fund healthcare and schools.
