On Bitcoin x AI, some initial thoughts:
Many folks correctly realize that machine-to-machine payments can be a big use case for BTC. If AI bots are getting access to financial rails then the natural choice seems like Bitcoin, the largest and most decentralized network for permission-less innovation.
However, we need to separate BTC the asset from Bitcoin the rails. While BTC is the pristine asset, Bitcoin rails are not ready for easy programmability. It’s objectively easier, faster, cheaper for developers to use Solana or Ethereum than work with Bitcoin L1 today.
Two things stand out for Bitcoin rails:
(a) Developers will need full VMs. Limited L2s may not be enough. Fully expressive programming environments unleash the full creativity of developers and interactions with AI models will likely be complex in logic.
(b) We will need new types of AI-specific primitives, e.g., an easy way to verify authenticity of models/data. New abstractions that make AI integrations easier, etc. Bitcoin L2s that can adapt to evolving needs will likely get more usage.
Holding BTC passively is a giant use case for Bitcoin, but Bitcoin x AI is different. AI uses of BTC require active transactions (payments, verifications, logic-based triggers, etc.), implying that most such activity will happen on Bitcoin L2s, as L1 will be too expensive.
Bitcoin L2s with full VMs like @Stacks, @rootstock_io, and some newer upcoming L2s are in a great position to start experimenting with AI integrations.
I’m excited about the possibility of Bitcoin x AI and plan to participate in the early working groups for AI x Stacks L2.
