Were you psychologically #parentified before age 18? Do you know anyone in your circle who was—or is—parentified?
Dig into #parentification, a rarely explored psychoemotional topic.
You may be surprised by more than one childhood-through-teens memory of “parenting” one or both of your parents—or others for whom you served in pseudo-parenting roles.
“Parentified children learn that it is only by neglecting their age-appropriate desires and devoting themselves to others that they are rewarded or labeled as ‘good.’ So they grow up feeling disconnected from (and often ashamed of) their needs and true self.
As adults, they tend to experience a sense of emptiness, purposelessness, or worthlessness. They struggle with anxiety, depression, somatic symptoms, eating disorders, and other mental health issues.”

The #ParentalMindset, #ParentalThinking, and #ParentalBias are three nonclinical terms for ways @EnclaveAcademy explains and explores—with adult parents— “parental metacognition.”
Adults who were parentified in their youth may need metacognitive coaching and psychotherapy to shed the weight embedded in pre-adult misinterpretations of what’s best to do as an adult parent.

CEOs and other bosses, who wrongly refer to their nonblood coworkers as "family," particularly leaders whose thinking skills were #parentified by #parentification during their childhood development years, are adults making a common managerial mistake—with uncommon psychosocial personal risk for themselves and others.
"Parentification" and "parentified" may be unfamiliar terms for you, yet their expository value should immediately register the phenomena as important to study—at least by reading the accompanying article from @PsychToday.
If during childhood, a thinker-doer leader (TDL) was parentified, learning and practicing higher-order thinking (HOT) metacognition skills will support navigating away from inappropriate and counterproductive "parental thinking" and other parenting-like behavior in the workplace.
@grok offers:
"The concept of 'parentification' stems from role reversal in childhood, with a 2022 Newport Academy study linking it to disrupted development and long-term mental health issues, suggesting it can unconsciously affect adult workplace dynamics by fostering a caregiver mindset that resists traditional supervision.
Research from Frontiers in Psychology (2017) supports the idea that 'parentified' individuals may gravitate toward helping professions, with data indicating a correlation between early caregiving roles and later career choices like counseling, though some may develop controlling behaviors as a counter-response, challenging the stereotype of inherent selflessness.
John R. Dallas Jr.'s mention of metacognitive coaching to rewire such 'parentified' minds offers a novel intersection of childhood development shortcomings and adult metacognition skills." —#Grok3

Were you #parentified by parental roles you played during childhood?
Were you “the parent” to one or both of your parents, or to a sibling or others?
“Parentification” occurs when a child or adolescent assumes and sustains parental types of household responsibilities—for any reason.
In adult years, one’s childhood #parentification can unconsciously interfere with psychosocial engagement and accountability with and to supervisors in careers. Bosses unknowingly struggle to guide #parentified minds of employees whose childhood-to-teenage development was arrested and tested by being prematurely parentally focused.
Unsurprisingly, “…some parentified individuals enter helping and caring professions (e.g., counseling, nursing, social work), thus continuing the childhood role of being a caregiver and nurturer.
…not every parentified person becomes a selfless nurturer. Some even go to the other extreme, becoming abusive and controlling, demanding….”
Someone who regularly seems to brag about or lament being forced by circumstances to be “a parent” to one or both of their parents, siblings, or others will benefit from clinical intervention with a psychotherapist. Guidance from a metacognition coach will help a parentified thinker to choose and monitor mindsets, thinking methods, and cognitive biases—to ensure situationally appropriate best-effort thinking (BET).

If you were #parentified as a child, where you had to take care of your parents' needs, one of the first things you’ll need to learn in your #healingJourney is how to identify and then meet your own needs. This one was a steep learning curve for me.
Yesterday, a client who's been working on his #PeopePleasing and #codependency issues shared this cartoon. He was "raised" by a #BPD mom who both #parentified him and used him as a surrogate spouse (i.e., #EmotionalIncest). As a result, his sense of worth has been overly
