@mmamas1973 Agree 100% - ESPECIALLY when I hear disease-first descriptors like epileptics, diabetics, rheumatoids, etc. #PatientFirstLanguage

#EmpathicCommunication is vital to supporting #PatientsWithCancer and their families. Respectful language is part of this approach and key to ensuring that every patient receives the best possible care. #PatientFirstLanguage
Couldn't be prouder, more grateful to
@BrownAdey and more excited with our opening lecture for the @GreekDietitians congress! Let's remove #obesitystigma Put the person before the condition! Use #patientfirstlanguage #Obesityempower #hdacongress What a great start!
Temple IM alum and new hospitalist, @nikdes13, teaching today about the impact of the language we use, particularly as it comes to patients with substance use disorder. Appreciate the thoughtful, compassionate insights! #WordsMatter #PatientFirstLanguage

A couple of weeks ago, I read a book geared towards general public on intermittent fasting - where is the person-centered language for diabetes? #diabetes #wordsmatter

We're so excited to have @DrAngelaFitch (@massgeneral, @harvardmed) join us for a #HMDFacDev Conference today on Zoom from 12:00 -1:00 PM! #PatientFirstLanguage @AJenkins_MD
You’re doing great and your advocacy for #patientfirstlanguage and getting rid of #obesitystigma is appreciated. I’m very proud of you
Weight loss surgery didn’t just save my life it gave me a whole new one , ten stone lost and maintained over two years post bypass ..healthy is my new happy 😃

So here we go, first up is @ProfBatterhamMD talking about the importance of the patient voice from @ObesityEmpower, the complexity of #obesity, discussion about the @NatureMedicine consensus status & #patientfirstlanguage

Also can’t forget the disheartening and offensive “Sickler” for those pts coming in w/acute chest
❌ Cirrhotic
❌ CHFer
❌ Diabetic
❌ Vasculopath
❌ Schizophrenic
Although often done for efficiency, these terms impart bias on our pt’s care

Language is important.
It is a patient with asthma, not an ‘asthmatic’. A person with cystic fibrosis not a ‘CFer’
I’m working on changing my language. It’s hard because these terms are so pervasive in medicine but I’m trying to be mindful.

Yes, you are correct.
Patients have a disease, are not their disease. #patientfirstlanguage
Gonna post every question that starts like this because I think it perpetuates stigma. “23 y/o overweight black woman”

Agree. Especially important with multiple comorbid conditions with our patients. Vital to look at what is most important to them. #patientfirstlanguage
🤔is it time to move away from “Chief Complaint” and instead use “Concern to be Addressed”? Semantics, I realize. But negative words like “complaint” frame our mindset
"IBD sufferers" is such a clunky term. Can we please use "People with IBD" instead. The disease does not define us. I'm pretty sure this rule applies to any illness right? #ibd #PatientExperience #PatientEngagement

Just heard someone say "MS patient" and "cancer patient". My professors would freak out #patientfirstlanguage #PTschoolprobs
