The Bahamas has had some form of custom collection since at least 1729 when Woodes Rogers first arrived in the islands. An Act was passed on 21st March 1914 to establish the Customs Department as "separate and apart" from its ties to the Treasury Department, and in 1989 regulations provided for the appointment of a seal and flag. While "loot" may have made you think about pirates (or expelling them), the phase was talking about the exemption that we can claim when we come back from our shopping trips to Miami (not Florida).
