#PointeFire: Firefighters battled fast-moving brush fire threatening a veterans housing community in Santa Clarita. I spoke to a veteran who was evacuated from the neighborhood. He expressed significant thanks to those who stood in the face of danger to keep their close-knit community safe.
Residents, including veterans living in the nearby community, were forced to evacuate as firefighters worked to protect homes and slow the fire’s advance.
“I was sitting in my living room, and I noticed the light outside looked different,” Chris Landgren said. “Then my neighbor called and asked how close the fire was. I went outside, looked over, and the fire was right there.”
Within moments, @SCVSHERIFF deputies were driving through the neighborhood ordering residents to evacuate.
“I grabbed my three dogs, loaded them into the car, and headed to my mother-in-law’s house,” he said.
After dropping off his pets, Landgren returned to find the neighborhood engulfed in smoke.
“All you could see was a big smoke cloud,” he said. “Luckily, they let me walk back up, and everything was still standing. I was really relieved to see that.”
Landgren said his biggest concern wasn’t initially his own home, but his neighbors.
“The fire was right up against their back fences,” he said. “I was worried their roofs were going to catch fire.”
The community, he noted, is made up entirely of military veterans.
“We’re all veterans. You have to be a veteran to live here,” Landgren said. “There aren’t many neighborhoods like this that exist. It would be terrible to lose a place like this.”
Offering a message to the firefighters still battling the blaze, Landgren added, “From one veteran to another, we appreciate your service and thank you for all you do. You’re out there saving lives, saving homes, saving everything that people have. This could have gone really bad, and without them, I don’t know if any of this would still be here.”
As of 4 p.m., the fire had grown to 58.5 acres. Firefighters engaged in an aggressive ground and air attack. @LACOFD reported forward progress stopped before 4 p.m.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
