In the line of duty. Common #milkweed (MW) blooms are a magnets for #insects. Some visitors, even #honeybees, become ensnared by the MW #pollinia & are not strong enough to free themselves if pollinia become snagged. They may die or fall prey to opportunistic predators.

Won’t end well! Shackled w/ #milkweed #pollinia & held fast by floral leg hold traps, this struggling #fly, caught near the crab #spider’s lair, also wears a #phoretic mite. High drama follows furious #pollinator activity around milkweed blooms. Some are caught, others fly free!

"Doin' it" & doing their part for pollination! Soldier #beetles (#Cantharidae) were all over #milkweed blooms feeding & mating. #Pollinia (milkweed pollen packets) stuck to their tarsi show they were feeding on MW before they mated. Moving pollen is a price of "doing" business.

Employing the old ‘hinged-lip’ trick, the flower of the #Bulbophyllum lobbii #orchid has a delightfully wobbly lip. This feature spills #pollinators that land back against the flower’s reproductive parts, picking up sticky #pollinia packets or depositing pollen from other plants.

This #Maxillaria cucullata #orchid in bloom at #SmithCollegeBotanicGarden has a hidden feature: a hinged labellum! Hints at hefty pollinator who might interact w/ flower in wild and end up tumbled against #pollinia on column. Unclear if reward or deception underlies interaction.
