Meet polyhalite, a geological treasure with a unique story.
▶️ Formation Story
Polyhalite, a hydrated sulfate of potassium, calcium, and magnesium (K₂Ca₂Mg(SO₄)₄·2H₂O), was born in the ancient Zechstein Basin, stretching from northern England to Poland.
Around 260 million years ago
during the Permian period, vast seawater bodies repeatedly flooded and evaporated in arid conditions.
This cyclic evaporation
concentrated salts, depositing layers of minerals like calcite, dolomite, gypsum, anhydrite, and halite before polyhalite crystallized.
Formed through
synsedimentary metasomatism, polyhalite emerged as earlier gypsum beds dehydrated into anhydrite, reacting with potassium- and magnesium-rich brines to create this complex sulfate mineral.
▶️ Geological Information
Polyhalite is an evaporite mineral, typically found in sedimentary marine evaporite deposits.
It crystallizes
in the triclinic system, though crystals are rare, often appearing as massive, fibrous, or foliated masses.
Its color ranges
from colorless to white or gray, with brick-red or pink hues due to iron oxide inclusions.
With a Mohs hardness
of 3.5 and a specific gravity of 2.78, it’s brittle with perfect cleavage on {101} and conchoidal fractures.
Polyhalite is water-soluble
leaving a calcium sulfate residue, and gives a purple flame when heated due to its potassium content.
Key deposits include
the Carlsbad Potash District in New Mexico, the Stassfurt region in Germany, and the Fordon Evaporite Formation in North Yorkshire, UK, where the world’s only polyhalite mine, Boulby, operates.
The Woodsmith Mine
also in North Yorkshire, is set to begin extraction in 2027, tapping a 796 km² deposit at depths of 1,000–1,550 meters.
▶️ Interesting Fact
Polyhalite’s name, derived from Greek “polys” (many) and “hals” (salt), reflects its complex composition of multiple metal sulfates.
Unlike halite (table salt)
it’s a fertilizer powerhouse, delivering four essential nutrients, sulfur (48% SO₃), potassium (14% K₂O), magnesium (6% MgO), and calcium (17% CaO), with low chloride, making it ideal for sustainable agriculture.
