Doug Wilson is a self-ordained “pastor” of a very influential church. An unsuspecting woman approached the church leadership asking for help finding a husband. They matched her with a man named Steven Sitler, a convicted serial pedophile who has confessed to the molestation of more than 25 children. The couple, who wanted children, needed the court’s permission to cohabitate, so one of the church elders, an attorney, pled Sitler’s case, despite the warnings of the psychological experts, and permission was granted. Doug Wilson officiated the wedding and asked God to bless the union with children. Shortly after their child was born, Sitler molested him. When asked about the affair, this is what Doug Wilson had to say: “And just so — to be really clear about this — I conducted the wedding and would do so again next week. So this is not one of those things where I wish I hadn’t done that. It would have been much more convenient had this not happened, but I don’t think we were put here for convenience. I think we’re, this has been a big trouble but I would do it again.” This is just one of a litany of horrible situations involving this pastor. Now major influencers on the conservative Christian right are increasingly platforming Doug Wilson. And I’m over here shouting “Mayday!” We have to fix this.
