Not everyone is a “reader.” A lot of people get everything on the internet.
That still counts.
The job is the same: a well-informed electorate.
First Amendment is the ground.
Media awareness is the chore.
Know your sources:
Local, national, international — three altitudes, one duty.
Local tells you what the council just did to your water, your school, your street.
National tells you what the country just bound itself to.
International tells you the world did not start at your feed.
A free press is supposed to make those three talk to each other without turning them into a team sport.
Damaged by design:
Ranking outran reporting.
Heat outran homework. Twitter was, for a stretch, a place you could have a live argument and still be a citizen when you logged off.
Then the temperature broke — the stairs, the spectacle, the product that paid factions better than facts.
News deserts grew next to book deserts.
People learned “news” as whatever slammed the chest first.
Misinformation spreads faster than truth
It does not need you to be dumb.
It needs you to be fast.
A claim with no source. A screenshot with no date.
A loop of host → pundit → official → amplifier.
Once you learn a few sources that still do the work — and how the junk travels — you can stop being the last pair of hands that drops it in the square.
Just pick up your trash:
Checking something before you post it is picking up trash instead of leaving it on the ground.
That is media awareness.
That is how real debate gets its room back.
You do not have to be a reporter. You have to refuse to litter.
Real Journalists never left. They were vilified and suppressed but they stayed.
The kid who only ever got the internet. The neighbor who only ever got cable. None of them are the enemy. The product is.
Know your media:
• Local first, then up the altitude.
• One primary document — article, filing, minutes — before one dunk.
• Name the source. If you can’t, don’t throw it.
• Kids off the product. Adults in the debate.
• Protect the square so an argument can be had without a harvest.
