Formation Story
Proustite forms in low-temperature hydrothermal veins, often in silver-rich deposits where sulfur, arsenic, and silver combine under reducing conditions.
Found in mining regions
like Germany’s Saxony, Mexico’s Zacatecas, and Chile’s Chañarcillo, it crystallizes in fractures of volcanic or sedimentary rocks.
Its vivid red hue
preserved in dark environments, fades with light exposure, making it a treasure for miners and collectors.
Geological Information
Proustite (Ag₃AsS₃), a silver arsenic sulfide, belongs to the trigonal crystal system, forming prismatic or scalenohedral crystals up to 5 cm, though it often appears massive.
Its translucent to transparent
ruby-red color, with an adamantine luster, yields a Mohs hardness of 2–2.5 and a specific gravity of 5.57.
Associated with argentite
pyrargyrite, and galena, it’s a key silver ore in epithermal vein systems.

Major deposits occur
