@ashleyscastro and I are SO grateful for the opportunity to chair this session (thank you @apa!). We collaborated w/ so many amazing students and professors, felt incredibly validated, & learned a lot!

Thank you to our presenters, panelists, & audience members for making this an incredibly meaningful experience.
This was for us, by us. We need spaces like these to discuss the needs of #1stgen / low-SES students. Let's continue the conversation.

& #1stgen / low-SES students, thank you for all that you contribute to our doctoral programs. Remember that you are not alone❤️

@1stGenPsych @prof_burchett @justinlmatthews @APA The admissions process: Consider why we need standardized test scores. We know that systemic educational barriers in K-12 are a confound when it comes to interpreting SAT & GRE scores. Why maintain this barrier, enforced by systems of oppression, any longer?
#PsychClassChat
@1stGenPsych @prof_burchett @justinlmatthews @APA - Budget of ALL costs associated w/ study
- Record of all supports on campus 4 LIEM students (e.g., financial aid, food bank)
- Estimate of debt accrued upon degree completion
- AND, I know that app fees have a purpose, but they're SO cost prohibitive!

Q5. @prof_burchett and @justinlmatthews have a document they’re sharing with graduate programs about how to make the admissions process more equitable in #psychology. What ideas do you think should be incorporated into the document?

@1stGenPsych @APA @APAGradStudents @APAPublicInt @APAEducation Ask your department (chair or head of grad studies), mentor, professors, etc about funding opportunities. It's so common to only find out about them after you are eligible/after they are useful! #PsychClassChat
Q4. @aecrossing mentioned the “hidden curriculum”: those unwritten and unofficial rules that we are assumed to know as students.
#firstgen & low SES students, what surprised you about the hidden curriculum in your programs?

@APA @APAGradStudents @APAEducation
@1stGenPsych @APA @APAGradStudents @APAPublicInt @APAEducation It can be isolating to hear about things that are only accessible to high SES folks, like fancy vacations & trips to expensive restaurants #PsychClassChat
Q3. We talked a lot about challenges but 1st gen/low SES students bring SO MANY strengths to their doctoral training.
#AcademicTwitter what are some of those strengths we can help each other remember?

It's morally and financially irresponsible to require in-person schooling with the almost-certain future of moving online. It costs money to move, to travel, to prep for physically attending school. Why is @UWMadison doing this to students?
#PsychClassChat @1stGenPsych #COVID19
Q2. #firstgen / low-SES students students: what advice do you have for students just starting their doctoral program in psych?
#PsychClassChat #Psychology #AcademicChatter @APA @APAGradStudents @APAPublicInt @APAEducation
Q1. #firstgen / low-SES psych students: what is something you wish peers & faculty in your program knew about your experiences?

We treat the whole student in school psych—that should apply to the treatment of GRAD students, too. Major considerations include the complex systems of power and privilege that impact individuals.
– inspired by @aecrossing's panel contribution
