George Lucas’ $1 billion museum sits on publicly owned land in Los Angeles — with a base rent of just $30 a year. The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art holds a 99-year lease for its Exposition Park site. That unusual agreement has now become part of a legal dispute brought by electrical subcontractor J.E. Snyder Electric, which argues that the project’s use of public land should have subjected it to California public-works requirements. The museum maintains that the project was privately funded. The lease also includes substantial obligations involving parking, park improvements and public space. Designed by Ma Yansong of MAD Architects, the museum is scheduled to open on September 22, 2026.
