Nachdem Joachim Paul (AfD) auf Basis eines von Oberbürgermeisterin Jutta Steinbruck (SPD) angeforderten Schreibens des Landesverfassungsschutzes von der Oberbürgermeisterwahl ausgeschlossen wurde, äußerten zahlreiche Bürger ihren Unmut in Zuschriften. Die Stadt erstattete Anzeige gegen etwa 300 dieser Schreiben, obwohl darin keine Straftaten erkennbar waren. Ein Polizeisprecher erklärte, dass hunderte Protestschreiben ohne strafrechtlich relevanten Inhalt angezeigt wurden.
