🇨🇦 This is #RCAF CC-130H Hercules 130340 #C2AF95 identifying itself as #RESC340, one of the last two in the fleet still tasked with SAR out of Winnipeg. The missing aircraft is 1982 Cessna 172 C-GPTO #C06E41, which shows no sign of being equipped with a Mode-S/ADS-B Out transponder, it didn't need to have one according to Canadian Aviation Regulations, and the owner didn't feel like installing one. If it had an Emergency Locator Transponder, and if it worked, they should have found it by now. With seemingly no location data transmitted from the aircraft, their last known location would be determined by radar, but radar coverage for low flying aircraft over Canada is limited. Without the flight data provided by ADS-B Out, Mode-S, or an ELT, the search will have to cover a very large area, and likely use last transmissions from any cell phones aboard the aircraft to get an idea what tower picked them up and in what area they were in. The CC-130H Hercules costs ~$50K per flight hour, installing an ADS-B Out transponder on a Cessna 172 costs < $5K, they have already flown over 8 hours searching for the missing plane, not counting other aircraft conducting the search. If in the year 2026 people want to fly their own private aircraft they should not have the option to do so without transmitting their location to ground stations, satellites, and other aircraft using ADS-B Out.

An RCAF C130 landed in Regina around noon and was later seen by several locals circling the Corning area. There are two unconfirmed reports it’s part of a search operation for a plane which went missing early this morning on route to Carlyle from Regina. Last contact with the 172 Cessna was at 3am over Handsworth.
