🚂 WRAPPING UP - 'Locomotive Maintenance' 🚝
Today, we were thrilled to hear from industry leaders who shared their insights on keeping their locomotives moving reliably, sustainably, and efficiently.
Here’s a snapshot of the highlights from this #RFmember hosted event with UKRL:
🟣 David Golding, GB Railfreight 🗣️ As a chartered mechanical engineer and Safety & Sustainability Director, David emphasised the importance of balancing engineering excellence with safety and compliance. With a restructured leadership approach, GB Railfreight separates asset management from supplier oversight, ensuring their locomotives and wagons remain top performers while meeting rigorous standards.
🟣 David Fletcher | Cappagh Group 🗣️ David showcased DC Rail’s incredible growth, from a £300k turnover in 2017 to nearly £10m today, powered by four 30-year-old Class 60 locomotives. Representing 1% of UK rail freight mileage, they’re proving reliability is key—delivering for major clients like HS2 with minimal downtime, treating locomotives like lorries to maximise utilisation, and urging suppliers to align with freight’s tight margins and fast turnarounds.
🟣 Stuart Broadbent | Alstom 🗣️Stuart highlighted Alstom’s focus on sustaining rolling stock for 50+ years, tackling obsolescence head-on. With 3,500 staff trained globally, they’re embedding expertise across the business. He stressed closer collaboration with OEMs as technology evolves, noting that maintaining modern locomotives is increasingly complex.
🟣 Gareth Roberts | UKRL 🗣️ Gareth underscored UKRL’s commitment to excellence through collaboration, a growth mindset, and people. From hosting loco working groups to launching a leadership program, they’re fostering skills to maintain a diverse fleet—spanning 60 years of tech—while emphasising that joint problem-solving and strong relationships drive the industry forward.
🟣 Haydn Vaughan | Beacon Rail 🗣️ Haydn, Fleet Director at Beacon Rail, gave an update as a rolling stock asset owner, highlighting the challenge of managing locomotives aged 0-50 years, with obsolescence a growing hurdle. Beacon excels at deploying mobile technicians to bring maintenance to the loco, reducing downtime, though he noted they’re not yet fully leveraging loco data. Brexit also complicates moving parts in and out of the UK, adding to their challenges.
