In India, religious reverence for Hanuman langurs and #Rhesus macaques is inspired by the #Hindu faith in the monkey god, Lord #Hanuman. Yet their fates diverge across cultural geographies. In smaller towns/villages with several temples nested within (native) vegetation-rich suburbs, black-faced Hanuman langurs thrive. Their tight kinship regulated sociality and arboreal agility suits less fragmented habitats. Conversely, in sprawling cities, the “fairer” rhesus macaques reign, fueled by garbage, foliage, and ritual feeding. Human favour is often tied to their appearance, as Priyanka Justa’s research in Himachal Pradesh on Assamese and rhesus macaques suggests. Her work revealed how Himachali villagers’ disdain for darker primates, Assamese macaques, shapes ecological outcomes, a pattern echoing beyond monkeys.
This interplay of perception and ecology extends to other species, like elephants, wild pigs, and leopards. These opportunistic animals infiltrate urban fringes, their success hinging on human tolerance and behavioural plasticity, mirroring primates’ dynamics. Here, cognitive processes in novel ecosystems drive behaviour-demography feedbacks: humans feed or shun animals based on charisma or cultural significance, creating cultural feedback loops (called co-cultures) that alter animal demographics. Our work on kites in Delhi underscores how such human subsidies—ritual or waste—reshape ecology and behaviour.
These interactions form cultural geographies where reverence frequently meets conflict, spotlighting the #OneHealth framework: human, animal, and environmental well-being are intertwined. Quite often, the poor and subalterns suffer the conflicts mediated by access to ritual feeding.
Urbanisation amplifies this, with habitat fragmentation favouring species like macaques, whose fission-fusion societies adapt to chaos, over langurs’ stable groups. The latter falters when villages give way to fragmented and infrastructure-lined ecosystems. Leopards, too, navigate this continuum of coexistence and conflict, their presence a litmus test for our ecological empathy.
