I appreciate the similarities between theJewish and Lutheran traditions on the subject of organ donation because it reinforces the idea to help others and save lives. So few times throughout life do you truly get to help someone in this way. #RLST305b

In reference to the case study about vaccinations, I find it interesting that there are people who side with parents that refuse to vaccinate their kids due to their "personal health benefits" when it is a risk to not only the unvaccinated kids, but other young children

It was interesting to read how the concepts of autonomy & informed consent tie together to create the framework of standards for surrogate decision making. A set of standards for decision making include: autonomous directives, to substituted judgment, to best interests
#RLST305b Respect for autonomy: when does parent decision making end? Depends on issue (sex, gen health)? Do parents keep in mind best interest of kid or are they focused on their own interests? Is that fair?
It's surprising that ethical research deteriorated during WWII. With all of the terrible things going on during this time, I'd have thought the U.S. would protect its people, not subject them risky experiments without consent. #RLST305b
I was always aware abt the concerns of sexuality in relationships, having quite a religious family. I did not know that it's the same case for all of the other religions as well. It's crazy to think about how modern times are so different from most religious customs. #rlst305b
Most Abrahamic religions agree that abortion should be avoided, but recognize that there are some justifiable circumstances. The debate, even within the same religion, is over what these circumstances are and the acceptable timeline in which to act on these conditions. #RLST305b
Mahowald emphasizes an important point in the abortion debate that we often overlook: legality and morality are related but not equivalent. If this principle is kept in mind, it would be much easier for pro-choice and pro-life to reach an agreement. #RLST305b
If no cure exists, most religions agree on palliative care. Death can never be intended, but pain relief can be achieved through any method, even if it is a certain side effect. It seems like "letting die" is ok, as long as the steps to do so are labeled properly. #RLST305b
There is no single definition of a good death. It's influenced by religion, culture, change. When a patient has a slow-dying disease all they can do is decide their path based on their interpretation of a good death. Time creates change, so will the term of a good death #RLST305b
If suicide is “the direct killing of oneself on one’s own authority” then who is to blame if it is not ones authority? For example a man who can not afford health care gets a fatal disease. Do you blame him or the doctor. If him is that suicide? #RLST305b
In Islamic law I feel it is hard to meet the needs of a constantly changing society. There are multiple principles to take into account when making a decision. To make a decision you have too weigh the good and bad, while managing "circumventing of hardship"principle. #RLST305b
Dr visits can be confusing, causing patients to forget that they have final say in their care. I find it admirable that the dancer mentioned by C&S considered her holistic health in her decision to stop treatment. Patient agency is crucial, Dr doesn't always know best! #RLST305b
Even though they might share similar views on providing health care to people, I think it is interesting that Catholics are more opposed to providing aid to people who are responsible for their own health problems. I wonder how this applies to mental health. #rlst305b
I saw a lot of the themes we talked about in class in lissa. One was the treatment of the body after death. Layla's mom criticizes Anna's family for creating her mom so layla reminds her mom that there are differences between cultures and no one is inherently right. #rlst305b
In a class earlier, we talked about organ donors, and if it's okay to take someone's organs to save 5 other people who need them, even if they aren't a donor. This seems similar to the vehicle tests in that the body was used but could not give its consent to the tests. #rlst305b
"Compassion is a virtue, not a principle...Compassion, too, must be subject to moral analysis, must have its reasons,& those reasons must also be cogent."Pellegrino #RLST305b Virtues vary, but principles are agreed upon ideals;mindful judgement & perspec. r key.
The RDE is an interesting topic. The four conditions that have to be met in order to justify a certain action mend together very well and it is a good baseline on which to judge an act. But, there are many cases where these conditions would be a gray area.

Honoring a patient's wishes is granting autonomy, but when the patient retracts the decision and one adheres to the initial decision, in what case is it appropriate to take on the new request to ensure autonomy? Minds do change. B&C 113-114 #RLST305b
I agree w/ Ramsey; random selection is best to allocate sparse medical resources Another man should not have this godlike judgment #RLST305b
