Thomas Jefferson coined the phrase "separation of church and state," in a letter he wrote to Baptists in Connecticut in 1802 who were concerned about religious oppression.
The concept was codified in the #USConstitution via the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment, which states that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.”
In 1847 the U.S. Supreme Court formally adopted the "separation of church and state" as a legal doctrine in the 1947 case Everson v. Board of Education. Justice Hugo Black invoked Jefferson's "wall of separation" metaphor to interpret the First Amendment.
Basically, the 1947 case guarantees the right to express your religious beliefs. But, some religions, specifically the Evangelicals, are raising money to elect politicians who will write legislation that insures there are no more abortions or gay marriages. This is wrong and any church who holds itself higher in authority than the principles embodied in the #USConstitution is NOT a religion that respects the rights of others.
All Evangelicals are Christians, but not all Christians are evangelicals. "Christian" is an umbrella term for anyone who follows Jesus Christ. "Evangelical" is a specific movement within Protestant Christianity defined by four core theological pillars.
Historians often define the movement using the Bebbington quadrilateral:
++ Conversionism: The belief that a person must have a personal, "born-again" conversion experience to become a true Christian.
++ Biblicism: A high regard for biblical authority over the #USConstitutiom, often treating the Bible as the literal, ultimate legal guide for faith and life.
++ Crucicentrism: A strong focus on the saving power of Jesus's crucifixion and his resurrection to atone for sin.
++ Activism: A commitment to expressing faith through active, personal evangelism (sharing the "good news") and social action.
