This was an interesting read! But you know I gotta chime in - quantifying roleplaying games in a scientific-adjacent way?! Sign me up!
Vincent proposes that there are two distinct ways to think of "roleplaying" in games:
An RPG needs to be resistant to pattern-ification. A game's mechanics can only do their job if they are present, but if people mistakenly think they've found the "real game" underneath the actual procedures then those procedures get ignored rather than doing their job. #RPGTheory
My guess is that the "reward" model of understanding how games work isn't useful or helpful, and may actively interfere (e.g. the "behaviorist" phase of Forge Theory when everybody would tell you to put a fan-mail mechanic in your game). #RPGTheory
It’s a good review of a concept about when do stuff comes into existence during a rpg. It has to be shared to other members of the group.

The cardinal rule of RPG epistemology is that nothing about the game is true or real until it's been said and understood ("established") at the table.
