Reflecting on yesterday's #RRMHChat from @APAPsychiatric, a powerful conversation that underlines the impact of the SCOTUS decision on Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization.
In light of the recent SCOTUS decision on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the APA wants to bring together leading psychiatrists and other experts to discuss the impact of this decision and Reproductive Rights and Mental Health overall. #RRMHchat

Thank you everyone for joining us for this important chat! #RRMHchat

@drlucyhutner @APAPsychiatric Yes! I think a lot of states, unfortunately, have made laws differently this time and mental health is clearly spelled out as not included in emergencies #rrmhchat
@APAPsychiatric For one thing we are raising awareness of the impacts of Dobbs v. Jackson on mental health and I have to thank our APA members for participating in the dialogue this evening. So much they said was so important and everybody should check out #RRMHchat
@APAPsychiatric A9. The APA will continue its long-standing advocacy on abortion:

@APAPsychiatric Q9. The focus on women's mental health during this, and all, times is vitally important. The APA is supporting our members as they help so many during this difficult time. (1/3) #RRMHchat
@APAPsychiatric Q8 Black and Brown women and pregnant people, as well as people from other economically marginalized groups, will be disproportionately affected by this ruling. This will only add to the sky high rates of maternal mortality among Black women in the US. #rrmhchat
Q8. What groups will be disproportionately impacted by this ruling? #RRMHchat

@APAPsychiatric A6 Restricting reproductive rights marginalizes and oppresses perinatal individuals and their families /supports, thus increasing the risk of depression, anxiety, and PTSD #RRMHchat
@drjessigold @APAPsychiatric @drjessigold I recently saw this article and thought of you #rrmhchat https://t.co/fYLgKqGB4c
Q7.With this SCOTUS decision, abortions will be much harder to impossible for women in many states, how will the added stress and anxiety of seeking abortion in another state or country impact their mental health? #RRMHchat

https://t.co/vjvC3Ok8L5 does the ability to have an abortion impact the mental health of the whole family and/or couple? #RRMHchat

@APAPsychiatric And as a person who is practicing psychiatry in one of those states, I also think it affects everyone I’m seeing and have heard it all week and then hearing about how it affects everyone (with a lot of anticipatory anxiety) affects us and all we hold as psychiatrists. #rrmhchat
@APAPsychiatric Q5 In turn, lack of access to paid parental leave, lack of affordable childcare and lack of flexibility in work schedules all affect earning potential. This particularly affects women in Black, Brown and other marginalized communities #rrmhchat
@APAPsychiatric A5 The majority of women seeking abortion are poor/low income. Access to abortion has been shown to reduce the number of teenage births and allowed them to obtain more education and avoid poverty—in turn providing greater economic advantages to their children later on #rrmhchat
@APAPsychiatric As a psychiatrist for healthcare workers I worry a lot what this will do to the healthcare workers put in positions against their morals over and over again. #rrmhchat
Be angry if you need to be. Be sad. Be numb.

Shut off the news/social media if you have to.
Whatever u have to do for u.
You are still a good advocate, woman, and human. #RRMHChat
Q3.What are some tools for those who feel anxiety and anger around the SCOTUS decision to overturn Roe v. Wade? #RRMHchat

@APAPsychiatric A1 Lack of access to abortion especially in the context of trauma, sexual coercion, or reproductive coercion increases the risk of trauma-related symptoms and PTSD #RRMHChat
