Back To The Future has popped up a couple times for me in the last few days & it got me thinking more about how we frame our expectations & how our framing changes generation to generation. Regarding "disclosure," it's always fascinating to me what people set as their bounds for what is/isn't possible. We've all got our spectrum of plausibility - least to most - and everyone is constantly evaluating stories from the news, personal experience, experiencer testimony, etc. & then plotting those stories somewhere on the spectrum. If the story is plausible, it gets comfortably mapped onto our spectrum whether we lean toward it being true or toward it being false. If the spectrum is quite narrow & the story too outlandish, it doesn't even bother to get plotted at all & instead is deemed impossible, stupid, insane, absurd, childish, or whatever other pejorative feels best in the moment to use in order to maintain the carefully curated bounds of that spectrum. While it may seem like I'm chiding people who discard stories which fall outside their spectrum, I'm really not. Instead, I'm trying to point out that we all do it all the time whether disclosure is our interest or whether it be the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We all function within an operational spectrum of our choosing & can't even conceive of functioning outside of it b/c we just haven't encountered a way of being that demonstrates it might be possible. When Marty McFly/Calvin Klein picked up the guitar at the Enchantment Under the Sea dance (wink wink) & played it in such a way that no one at that dance had ever heard before - he froze the room, he broke their brains, he scratched the needle across their records of what was possible introducing dissonance/disturbance. They didn't applaud, they didn't dance, they just stared. What possibilities about reality are we simply incapable of incorporating b/c we just don't have room for them on our spectrum? What "truths" of the future which, when presented to us today, seem so outlandish & ridiculous that we mock them & walk away? If you think they aren't out there already, mingling amongst us & picking at us with their absurdity, you just aren't paying attention. We can deride, we can jeer, we can stare with indignation at the disturbance & declare these aspects of reality to be wrong, but whether we like these absurdities of reality or not, one day, our kids are going to love it.
