A hidden fire‑safety rule is quietly adding $1+ million to the price of many new apartment buildings.
Crazy part?
The gear it mandates has been used exactly once in a real US fire.
Let’s unpack this 👇
This is a #YIMBY story about over-regulation of the built environment… in this case, about day care centers being prohibited from serving fresh fruit unless they install more sinks. #ReformTheBuildingCode
There's no way to make good policy without folks who change diapers, turn wrenches, and drive trucks at the lawmaking table. I'm running for Congress to make sure working people have a say in D.C.
The building code requires that every EV parking be ~6% wider than other parking spaces, even though EVs are not wider. A great example of how the building code drives (a) costs up and (b) land use quality down — without (c) any sensible reason.

Think you got your parking lot design locked in?!
Did you know EV Charging spaces have their own unique width requirements? Instead of 8'-6" wide, EV spaces need to be 9' -0" wide. Yay!
We should all be supporting @marketurbanism’s Center for Building in North America. #Reformthebuildingcode
I, along with @trevoracorn and Scott Brody, have submitted a proposal to the ICC to allow six-story multifamily buildings with a single stair. You can read more about it in a blog post here: https://t.co/fJcN5chur3
“Yet everything is fine.”

Not enough space for 2 fire engines to pass, yet everything is fine. It’s almost like the rules we are constrained by are irrational, or worse intentional, in order to manufacture car dependency
This is a very important thread about why we need to #ReformTheBuildingCode

🚨 Just as important as reforming the zoning code 🚨
2 months ago, an article in the @nytimes tried to get at why apartment buildings in the U.S. are so large, and so incredible bland.
Posited modulation, design review, cheap materials.
It's none of those.
It's our building code.
