Ethiopia’s Emerging Opposition Alliance: Can It Challenge or Overthrow Abiy’s Government?
The newly announced alliance is potentially significant because it brings together armed movements with different ethnic, geographic and political bases, including Fano in Amhara, the TPLF in Tigray and the OLA in Oromia, alongside other opposition groups. Collectively, they could place substantial pressure on the federal government by forcing Addis Ababa to confront multiple security challenges simultaneously across different regions. However, overthrowing Abiy’s government is considerably more difficult than expanding armed resistance.
The principal weakness is that these groups have different strategic interests and a history of confrontation, particularly between TPLF and Fano. Their immediate common ground appears to be opposition to Abiy and the pursuit of political change, but whether they can establish a unified political leadership, military command, territorial strategy and credible post-Abiy governing framework remains uncertain.
External involvement is another important factor. Eritrea has the strongest strategic reasons to oppose Abiy’s government, given the deterioration of relations between Asmara and Addis Ababa and the complex relationship between Eritrea and Tigrayan actors. Sudan is also strategically important because of the conflict along the Ethiopian-Sudanese border and the wider regional competition surrounding Ethiopia.
Egypt has significant strategic disagreements with Addis Ababa, particularly concerning the Nile and GERD, but this should not automatically be interpreted as proof that Cairo is directly supporting the opposition alliance militarily. Other regional powers, including Türkiye, Saudi Arabia and the UAE, have their own interests in Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa. The critical question is therefore not simply whether these groups can unite to oppose Abiy, but whether they can transform that temporary convergence into a coherent national political and military coalition capable of governing Ethiopia after any potential change in Addis Ababa.

U.S. Foreign Policy Toward the Horn of Africa
U.S. foreign policy toward the Horn of Africa is increasingly pragmatic and strategically calculated, capable of distinguishing between the competing lobbying campaigns advanced by supporters of the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) and Somaliland.
Although the Trump administration has often been perceived as unpredictable and transactional in nature, current policy assessments suggest that Washington believes both U.S. strategic interests and regional stability are best served through engagement with the leadership of the Federal Government of Somalia, while not necessarily treating Somalia’s territorial unity as an untouchable principle.
The position outlined in reports submitted by the U.S. State Department to Congress appears to articulate a nuanced approach, offering both sides political avenues and diplomatic engagement that sustain a degree of optimism and disappointment for their respective aspirations.
Consequently, the previously accelerating campaign advocating for Somaliland’s international recognition appears to have experienced a strategic slowdown. Simultaneously, however, mounting diplomatic pressure is likely to be placed on the Federal Government of Somalia to manage the country’s current domestic political disputes through an inclusive, consensus based political settlement.

The Growing Concerns Over PM Abiy’s Leadership in Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa
The Economist report on Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s leadership, suggesting that his ambitions are increasingly endangering both Ethiopia and the wider Horn of Africa region, raises serious concerns. Since coming to power in 2018, Ethiopia has experienced devastating internal conflicts, and the country has become increasingly fragmented along political and ethnic lines. Armed groups such as the Tigray forces, Fano, Afar militias, and the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) have strengthened and intensified fighting within their respective regions, while both the reputation of Abiy Ahmed’s leadership and Ethiopia’s international standing continue to deteriorate.
Regionally, Ethiopia’s involvement in broader geopolitical tensions, including the conflict in Sudan, its deteriorating relationship with Eritrea, and growing mistrust with Somalia, has deepened concerns. Somalia, in particular, increasingly perceives Abiy Ahmed as aligned with the geopolitical interests and policies of the UAE and Israel, especially regarding Somaliland-related issues. These developments appear to be pushing Prime Minister Abiy toward becoming a more authoritarian leader, rather than the reformist figure many expected when he first assumed office.
Ethiopia’s upcoming election is also unlikely to be viewed as free and fair by democratic standards, as there appears to be little or no meaningful opposition participating in the electoral process. It is widely anticipated that Abiy Ahmed and his Prosperity Party (PP) will secure an overwhelming victory.

Relying on Trump’s Power is a Fragile Illusion
Saudi Arabia and Pakistan’s rejection of the notion that any agreement with Iran must be contingent upon reconciliation with Israel represents a striking display of sovereignty, strategic defiance, and political independence, a position few states would dare to adopt under intense international pressure. Saudi Arabia no longer appears to regard Iran as an existential force capable of intimidation, and there are growing indications that the Saudi leadership has concluded Iran is not a power to be feared or politically blackmailed by. Standing firmly beside Riyadh is Pakistan, a nuclear-armed ally whose backing significantly alters the regional balance of power.
The era of Trump’s global leadership is unfolding amid profound geopolitical turbulence and escalating insecurity. The Russia-Ukraine war continues with no credible end in sight. In the Middle East, a dangerous and unpredictable confrontation has been unleashed ( IRAN vs US, Israel) with no certainty about where it may ultimately lead. Israel persists in its devastating military campaigns in Gaza and Lebanon, while Sudan remains engulfed in relentless violence and state fragmentation.
