Reflecting on the year & my visit to 20 cities & 50 mosques/sites for the #ReimaginingMosques #Byera research! Have been back in #Sydney for a month, yet still feel there is so much to take in, interrogate, appreciate & critique. Here are the top posts on the topic via Instagram.
Have had an interesting time in Paris, exploring mosques from the city centre to the suburbs & have gained an invaluable insight into the role of the mosque in Paris. Pictured, are 4 very different mosques from various eras-all proudly French Mosques. #ReimaginingMosques #Byera
Images of Shahporan Mosque by Architect Shahed Saleem @makespace_ The mosque needed an upgrade on a small budget, with the exisiting heritage listed terrace retained & a new building added. The two buildings sit well together in a beautiful composition. #ReimaginingMosques #Byera
While in London, I was privileged enough to catch up with Architect Shahed Saleem @makespace_ who’s been working on a no. of mosques & is the author of “The British Mosque”-we had a very insightful discussion on his work & creating site specific mosques #ReimaginingMosques #Byera
Yesterday I was very fortunate to sit down with Architect Julia Barfield, from @MarksBarfield, who has sensitively designed an environmentally conscious mosque in Cambridge, with community facilities accessible by all - currently under construction. #ReimaginingMosques #byera
Today, while taking photos of London Central Mosque, I was stopped by patrolling police, who were concerned about Islamophobic attacks on Mosques & that I could be staking it out. I reassured them I had a #Byera scholarship & this was why this topic is timely. #ReimaginingMosques
Had a fantastic chat with C. Po Ma from @moriyamateshima about the Aga Khan Museum & The Ismaili Centre, Toronto, a space for Ismaili Muslims which incorporates public space. The project’s success was hinged on extensive consultation with the community. #ReimaginingMosques #Byera
Today I had the privilege of speaking with Architect Mustafa Abadan from Skidmore Owings and Merrill @SOM_Design, about the Islamic Cultural Centre of New York, constructed in 1991 - the first and only purpose built mosque in #NYC. #ReimaginingMosques #Byera
Three blocks from the World Trade Centre is Park51, a construction site for luxury apartments & Islamic Cultural Museum. Reinvented from the once proposed 15 storey Mosque & Islamic Centre labelled “the Ground Zero Mosque” by those opposed to its construction. #ReimaginingMosques
Today I met with the articulate Architect, Koray Duman, from #BuroKorayDuman in #NYC. We talked about the shift from Mosques to Islamic Centres, and specifically his work on the concept design for an Islamic Cultural Centre in New York. #ReimaginingMosques
This is the Baitush Sharaf Jame Masjid Islamic Center in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn, over the road from Bedford-Stuyvesant, where most of the mosques in Brooklyn are concentrated. #ReimaginingMosques #byera
Currently walking through the borough of #Brooklyn in NYC. The gentrifying borough, is also the borough of many #mosques, with 98+ mosques, a portion of NYC’s 285+ mosques. The Muslim population of #NYC on a whole, is between 400-800K, the highest in the USA. #ReimaginingMosques.
LA’s 1973 Masjid Bilal. Destroyed by earthquakes in the 80s. It serves the black community, named after the first black man to say the call to prayer. The design by Langdon Wilson Architects appears traditional in form, however will be more open to the street. #ReimaginingMosques
The lack of purpose built mosques in LA & NYC speaks to a no. of factors. Communities were established early & built traditional mosques in the 60s/70s. Since then, funding meant, communities have used existing buildings, incl. former churches and synagogues. #ReimaginingMosques
Flying out in a few hours for the #byera travels! Looking forward to visiting the many contemporary mosques across America and Europe and speaking with Architects about the design process. First stop LAX. Pictured is the Surry Hills Mosque. #ReimaginingMosques
Some words I’ve written about my in-progress #byera research for #ReimaginingMosques. Thanks @ArchInsights for sharing.

On the first day of Ramadan, I’ve been reflecting on the places-the mosques-where people go to pray & connect with both religion & community. Pictured is King Faisal Mosque, Surry Hills, a terrace mosque with traditional elements & brutalist features. #ReimaginingMosques #byera
Insightful exhibition opening tonight @artdesignunsw forr Enough خلاص Khalas, by contemporary Australian Muslim Artists and Christian Thompson: Ritual Intimacy. Feeling inspired for my upcoming #ReimaginingMosques #byera project and the relationship of identity and place.
Looking forward to using this book by Architect Shahed Saleem @makespace_, as a reference tool and source of inspiration for my #Byera research, #ReimaginingMosques. https://t.co/trC0eI8iOk
