Back in '95, I took Intro to IR as a freshman. The syllabus had no people of color nor anyone on the left. I complained to my professor who told me there were none to include. He was wrong. 27 years later, I attempted to correct this by writing about DuBois in @ForeignAffairs.
This paper draws on #relempuvm, theories of race from Sylvester Johnson @syljohns & theories of rigid “scientistic” definitions from Peter Gottschalk #uvmresearch

In mere minutes, our first @REL_UVM student research presentation will be presenting! Quinn Cosentino ‘19, “Native Saints: Hagiography and Racialization in Colonial New France” a #relempuvm project that’s in revision in our colloquium now! @vickibrennan https://t.co/FlAAxdkUt0
#relempuvm y’all this book is 🔥🔥🔥

#relempuvm i visited John Brown's grave in lake placid and saw this statue that reminded me of Abu-Lughod. This is depicting abolitionist John Brown "saving" a much smaller, more passive AfAm child. Even in abolistionism the white man is the hero in the story of AfAm liberation

@ProfIRMF I feel like this could have been the course description for #relempuvm
#relempuvm @ProfIRMF is a great find for my project in 203
Finally, from the always excellent @uncpressblog: _A Saint of Our Own: How the Quest for a Holy Hero Helped Catholics Become American_, by Kathleen Sprows Cummings. Saints really seem like the best intermediaries between scholars and American Catholicism. https://t.co/OIQuYKGaaq
@TheEconomist Is there a reason this specific case is getting America's attention? Why now? Does the fact that this is happening in China change the way the West conceptualizes Islamophobia? #relempuvm
Anyway, those are my messy thoughts @ProfIRMF and #relempuvm folks, I'd love to hear yours. Good luck writing (and don't forget to drink water as well as coffee please 🚰).
I think, to put this in a specifically #relempuvm context, entirely avoiding slurs with gendered/racial/LGBT+ connotations sometimes causes people to ignore the cultural discourse that created them (or leads people to pretend that "that's all in the past").
Now I don't think that the song specifically provides a space for LGBT+ folks to reclaim the term, but the politics of naming is particularly relevant to our #relempuvm discussions.
Time for a coffee fueled #relempuvm thread, so I can work through some conversations I've been having lately ☕
#RelEmpUvm I really don't know what to send. I am going back to China. Let me show you the osmanthus tree in my house.

#RelEmpUvm The last class teacher asked us to recommend the content we have learned to our friends. I think this book is my favorite. My friends have a lot of history to make up the credits. I think this book will give them a lot of help.

#RelEmpUvm In fact, I found that the Chinese government's control over religion has become stronger than before. When I was in Gansu during the summer vacation, even the halal restaurant was not allowed to hang the title of the halal restaurant. link below
#RelEmpUvm On the surface, the Chinese government is the same for all religions. https://t.co/2RQEbs3Wb5
#RelEmpUvm My research has always wanted to add some attitudes about modern China towards religion. But I didn't talk about the space. In fact, I think communism has a similar effect to religion. But there are many advantages over religion, such as race, colonialism, and gender.
@Eliana_J_Fox @PodSavetheWorld @syljohns Presidential hagiographies mythicize and moralize political policy and US "values" (freedom, democracy, etc). It pushes agendas and creates and maintains the social order of the US just as they did for 17th century French imperialists #relempuvm
@Eliana_J_Fox @PodSavetheWorld I thought of this in @syljohns discussion of the Kennedies. The historical perfection we give them is part of a mythic hagiographical history, not an objective history. In this case, the Vita of JFK exists to deny that the US is systematically racist by nature #relempuvm
@Eliana_J_Fox @PodSavetheWorld I personally think hagiographies can be secular. Scientism is secular but still operates in the same ways as religion, so hagiographies that sanctify civic leaders are part of a civic religion even though its branded as "secularism." #relempuvm
