Yesterday, I went to see the Broadway play, "Justice On Trial," right over in Savannah, Georgia. It is a play where two lawyers take the Department of Justice to trial to sue them for reparations for descendants of those who were enslaved in America. They call witnesses to the stand, such as Harriet Tubman, Emmitt Till, W.E.B DuBois, and a pro-reparations economist. While there were some parts that irritated me, such as one part that said Barack Obama was the best president in this nation's history, some antics that harken to performative "pro black" activism, and parts where it seems the writers do not realize the immense political diversity among Black Americans (Freedmen), I overall enjoyed the play. It was funny, it had great music, it did touch on some social issues and shut down some myths, and most of all, it was very educational on the matter of reparations. It did a phenomenal job in that aspect! There were hundreds of people in attendance, damn near all black, and they were all talking about reparations when it was over. One of the W.E.B Dubois' great-grandchildren is behind the play, and he recognized several advocates in Savannah with the W.E.B DuBois Humanitarian Award, one being our beloved reparationist Tamera Shealy Johnson who helped bring the play to Savannah.
