It seems that there are two camps inside the transition team. One that wants to withdraw us from the WHO and one that wants to reform the WHO. It seems that withdrawal one is winning. United States was the largest single country donor to the WHO in 2022-23 and this will be a financial hit for the WHO, if we withdraw. All this said I’m in the camp of withdrawal as I don’t believe that the WHO can be reformed. Some fear that our withdrawal would cede leadership to China, but the question I have is aren’t they already leading it with DG Tedros Ghebreyesus at helm?! Despite the rumors of withdrawal, it seems that DG Ghebreyesus is optimistic that the US will “realize” that the partnership between the two will continue. I hope not.
