The Rexx Cinema, one of Kadıköy's iconic symbols that has been subject to a demolition decision, was known as the Apollon Theater 150 years ago. Built by the Kadıköy Greek Community, this historic building hosted numerous theater performances from the late 19th century onward. During the Ottoman period, Muslim women were forbidden to appear on stage and plays were usually performed by Greek, Armenian and Jewish women. In the 1920s, Afife Jale's performance at the Apollon Theater despite the ban was an important event in Turkey’s history of theater. In the early 20th century, movies started to be shown at the Apollon Theater. The cinema, which was named 'Şark' and 'Hâle' respectively, was rebuilt in 1961 after changing its architecture and was named Rexx Cinema.
