But now that the state borders are open, we’re looking forward to having more friends come to visit us in Adelaide. #RoamingMothUpdate

@CavalloDelMare @RTW_Aus @BirdlifeOz There was also a lot of rain while we were in north-east Victoria. Reuben got to see his first ever #waterfall and then the following day and even more spectacular waterfall. #RoamingMothUpdate

@CavalloDelMare @RTW_Aus @BirdlifeOz Somethings don't change, though, and it wouldn't be a Wooragee Christmas without an obligatory #Koala in the backyard. #RoamingMothUpdate

@CavalloDelMare @RTW_Aus @BirdlifeOz Contrary to the butcherbird and drier climate theory, my parents also now host Satin Bowerbirds & a bower in their backyard. These are more of a wet forest species. Footage is of a female-plumaged immature male dancing with a flowerhead trying to woo a female. #RoamingMothUpdate
@CavalloDelMare @RTW_Aus @BirdlifeOz Back at my parents' house, a few things have changed since I was a kid. They now have a resident pair of Pied #Butcherbirds. It used to be that you had to drive ~1 hour west out of the foothills and into the drier plains country to reliably find this species. #RoamingMothUpdate

@CavalloDelMare @RTW_Aus @BirdlifeOz Of course, we definitely found the time to twitch the Hudsonian #Whimbrel while we were in Victoria. What? Haven't you ever heard of taking your dog on a twitch? #RoamingMothUpdate

@CavalloDelMare @RTW_Aus @BirdlifeOz The major highlight of the last couple of months was a #roadtrip back to Victoria to see our families. #RoamingMothUpdate

@CavalloDelMare @RTW_Aus @BirdlifeOz We have also been going for walks at the beach. The walk along the path through the dunes is one of the best bits about a trip to the beach because there is always the chance of spotting a gorgeous #PaintedDragon. #RememberTheWild #RoamingMothUpdate

@CavalloDelMare @RTW_Aus @BirdlifeOz A little further afield, we have been enjoying the comings and goings at the park where we walk our dog every morning. #MankyParrot #RoamingMothUpdate

@CavalloDelMare @RTW_Aus @BirdlifeOz We also had a great time collecting the seed once it was ready. #RoamingMothUpdate

@CavalloDelMare @RTW_Aus @BirdlifeOz We'd been letting our native lawn grow rampant so that it would set seed for us fill in some patches where germination hadn't been that successful. The local #wildlife loved it and we loved the visits by species such as this Southern Grass-dart. #butterflies #RoamingMothUpdate

Yesterday's #RoamingMothUpdate was all about my research, but today I'll run you through some non-research highlights of the last two months. I'll start in my own backyard. We had a pair of Magpie-larks nest in our carport. Both chicks fledged, and one made it to independence!

What were the geckos doing on the shores of the #Coorong? Probably eating the abundant #chironomid (non-biting midges) population. The swarms of these insects make spotlighting for avocets challenging to say the least. #ProjectCoorong #RoamingMothUpdate

We've also encountered some Bluebonnet #Parrots at the very southern limit of their range as well as sporadic occurrences of Banded #Lapwings. #ProjectCoorong #RoamingMothUpdate

Somewhat less dignified, when I checked the data this morning, another #pelican has left the #Coorong. Instead of the ephemeral floodwaters in central Australia, this bird has travelled to the McLaren Vale rubbish tip. #ProjectCoorong #RoamingMothUpdate

@goyderinstitute @UniAdelSciences @Matt_HerringOz Remarkably, one tracked avocet and the dispersing pelican crossed paths within eight hours of each other west of Birdsville. #ProjectCoorong #RoamingMothUpdate

@goyderinstitute @UniAdelSciences @Matt_HerringOz Not to be outdone by the pelicans, the Red-necked #Avocets we have fitted tracking devices to have also packed their bags and departed the #Coorong following the rains in central Australia. #ProjectCoorong #RoamingMothUpdate

@goyderinstitute @UniAdelSciences One non-breeding individual has made a remarkable dispersal. It spent a month or so in @Matt_HerringOz's territory in southern NSW before venturing on to greener pastures following the recent deluge in central Australia. #ProjectCoorong #RoamingMothUpdate
