Top Tweets for #SEOtests
@BrightonSEO followers, our CEO @willCritchlow will be speaking again in October! This session is not to be missed - he's going to talk about why negative #SEOTests shouldn't be ignored and how you can make the most of them! Be sure to add https://t.co/iCEkdLWFPi to your agenda!

How much knowledge do executives need to know about an SEO test? Hmmm. Massively interesting!
A rather groovy topic to read by the brilliant Will Cirtchlow ;)
Read on!

Not only is that cool,
but pay attention to the details in that image.
Hands up if the negatives come as a surprise!

If you have noticed Google is re-writing your page titles you can retrospectively run an SEO test in SEOTesting and back date the 'changed date' to measure the impact.

This puts further onus on us to ensure that we double check what we say, and how it can be read (I know it's unfair, and "they" should be doing the work - but in the long run, it's easier if we take the responsibility).

:::𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗵𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 -1:::
We are not only responsible for how we test,
but how we write things up.
Over the years - this has massively improved!
Unfortunately, as the sector grows, more people are reading, and not as attentive/understanding as others.

:::𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 -3:::
We have to expect our results/findings to be questioned,
and have confidence that we have conducted our tests to such a degree of quality that they stand.
We can only do that if we keep in mind things like the above.
#SEOTests
:::𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 -2:::
There's also a degree of peer-pressure for some.
They don't want to say X, because they've seen Y is the more popular view, or that person-A has said Y previously.
Peer-review should be something we all look for.

I lied about 𝗠𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 being the hardest.
THIS is the hardest part.
Far to often - we have a concept, and desire to prove/disprove it.
Fighting our own bias is the biggest challenge we face!
#SEOTests
:::𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 - 3:::
Relativity is a key concept in our sector.
As explained above about the ranking value difference between results ... what we are measuring may not be "fixed".
It may not be that we can see X = 0.5.
It may vary from 0.3 to 0.7 etc. :(
#SEOTests
:::𝗠𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 - 2:::
This overlaps with 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻 and 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 - and may mean that we have to do a "sample" test (or tests) first,
to see what is discernible, or not.
As you can imagine - this can make testing a slow problem.
#SEOTests
:::𝗠𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 - 1:::
This can be the hardest part.
We have no real indication of differences between different elements/factors.
We also don't know what values G use, nor if they are consistent (concrete), or vary (fluid).
So trying to measure sucks.
#SEOTests
:::𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 - 3:::
As with other facets of conducting tests,
this can introduce additional complications and costs (Time/Effort at the least!).
But without such parallels, we don't know how reliable the results are :(
#SEOTests
:::𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 - 2:::
For SEO, it's vital to do this, because G runs so many tests and results may vary based on several other factors.
We need to do everything we can to ensure G isn't screwing with our methods/results.
(It's not intentional ;))
#SEOTests
:::𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 - 1:::
Running a test and gathering results is one thing.
But we have to do it several times.
This can help us avoid including mistakes/errors in our methods (deployment/collection/processing).
#SEOTests
:::𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 - 4:::
Again - we don't know how G evaluates things,
and there is the chance that G is more fluid than we think (it may compensate or treat X as Y if it see's fit!).
#SEOTests
:::𝗖𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 - 3:::
In some cases, we have only 2 conditions (present/not),
in others, we may have several states/versions (such as, pulling an example out of thin-air ... Heading tags :D).
Examinations between comparisons may not be easy.
#SEOTests
:::𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 - 2:::
There is also the possibility to test against "nothing" (null),
removal of an element/word/value etc.
(And the inverse - inclusion testing)
In some cases, we may only see things when they aren't there (as daft as that sounds :D).
#SEOTests
:::𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 - 1:::
A fundamental aspect of many types of test is comparison.
If possible, have a "control" - that could be "the norm", or something you are testing against.
In certain types of tests, you can compare multiple conditions (multivariate).
#SEOTests
:::𝗘𝗻𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻 - 4:::
The probable solution is to test against likely weaker results - those further/deeper into the SERPs,
where we may see lower-value changes have an impact.
This itself can present additional challenges in devising tests :(
#SEOTests
:::𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻 - 3:::
Assume every result on P1 SERPs has 100 points difference.
Any tests we do to check ranking impact Must produce 101+ points change (up or down) before we can see it.
Low-impact optimisations are hard to see at the top of the SERPs.
