One of these new case studies is on my SE Scotland Oak Dendrochronology (#SESOD) research project, which has revealed a distinct regional woodland and timber trade history over the last millennium. Find out more at the ScARF link below. #dendrochronology
Have you checked out SESARF yet?
Along with the first chapters of the framework, we have 9 brand new case studies highlighting significant archaeological work across South East Scotland.

Just updated the Dendrochronicle website events page for our forthcoming 2023 talks and workshops. https://t.co/C83k5it4XL
Photo is the nave roof of St Mary's Haddington, which will feature in my talk on my SE Scotland Oak Dendro project to the Haddington History Society #SESOD

For #thicktrunktuesday some of the gorgeous Dalkeith Old Oaks. I've built a ring-width chronology from deadwood here (#hessupported) which spans AD 1569-2010 and is a crucial building block for a long oak chronology to use in cultural heritage dendro dating in SE Scotland #SESOD

@Lownes_Theifis Very nice reference. I’ve analysed oak in the clock tower but that is later - 1670 - and comes from Norway. Most of Heriot’s is built with conifer timber which is possibly what the joisting mentioned here is. My research project #SESOD was only on oak. Just writing it up now!
Going Norman for #AdoorableThursday
South door, Kirkliston Parish Church, Edinburgh. Blocked up in the early 19thC.
I’ll reveal the exciting dendro-date of timbers from the kirk’s tower in my #SESOD talk at the ELBAC archaeology conference on 19 Nov https://t.co/fCNofsPiOA

Thanks @socantscot 🌳😍
I'm giving a talk on my SE Scotland Oak Dendro #SESOD research project (#HESsupported) at the ELBAC conference on 19 Nov - with exciting results from other sites to be revealed, as well as St Giles. Conference details here - https://t.co/fCNofsPiOA
@SocAntiquaries @AmAntiquarian @LAMPS_Edinburgh @Medievalists @SocMedArch @Dendrochronicle @StGilesHighKirk @HistEnvScot @EdinburghWH @WhatOnEdinburgh You can find out more about @Dendrochronicle's research at St Giles' and how the results are adding to our understanding of Scotland's past on the @HistEnvScot blog: https://t.co/ux1HUVTF7L
More about the Ancrum Old Bridge project in this recent blog by @AncrumDistrict - such an important discovery of a lost medieval bridge, and I'm delighted to have been involved (through my #SESOD project developing oak dendrochronology in SE Scotland) https://t.co/aeFbgFroSZ
Update for #TreeRingTuesday Partway through Kirkliston analysis, tricky with only 2 timbers, but looks likely to be medieval native #Scottish oak because not matching our usual import sources. So step by little step, we build up the native Scottish tree-ring record #SESOD #scarf
That delicious moment of anticipation. Preparing cores from 2 promising old oak timbers in Kirkliston Parish Church, Edinburgh. Church has 12thC elements though much altered later. Are they early? Are they native? Will soon discover! #SESOD #Dendrochronology #Scotland #SCARF

The Capon Tree, Scottish Borders #thicktrunktuesday
My photo from 2013. Means much more than one old tree, it represents the medieval Jed Forest which my #SESOD #dendrochronology work shows was heavily impacted by the 14thC, frequent warfare & grazing impacts the likely culprits.

Sharing again my 2020 blog for HES on #dendrochronology at @StGilesHighKirk Edinburgh. Results were early & exciting! Part of my same #SESOD research project as yesterday’s thread on Kirkliston Parish Church. Nearing end of the project, preparing for publication later this year.
The dendrochronology of St Giles Cathedral tower - Historic Environment Scotland Blog - delighted to have been invited to write this for @HistEnvScot about @StGilesHighKirk and the amazing story hidden in the medieval tower’s tree-rings https://t.co/Bnznbtbxyv
The character of the two Kirkliston oak timbers is consistent with an early date & a local origin as I hope the #SESOD analysis of the cores will prove. Dendrochronology can provide a precise felling date (to a year) & a provenance. I will share the results in due course. 7/n END

Extending the #SESOD oak tree-ring record back further relies on finding that rare native oak timber in buildings and archaeological sites. I will say more about other sites later this year, but that is why Kirkliston Parish Church’s two recycled old oak timbers were sampled. 6/n

It’s become clear through #SESOD that surviving native oak timber is very rare in SE Scotland -yet v precious for developing a SE Scotland regional oak reference chronology. I do have a good start though, my Dalkeith Old Oaks deadwood tree-ring record goes back to mid 16th C -5/n

We recce’d them last year for #SESOD, South East Scotland Oak Dendrochronology project, my HES-funded project to develop the native oak tree-ring record. Our record is dominated by imported timber from late medieval times on -eg imported Baltic boards in the Stirling Heads 4/n

Springwood Park Oak, Kelso. A remarkable survivor of the once extensive Scottish Borders forests -for #thicktrunktuesday My #SESOD dendrochronology research project is revealing the massive scale of human impact on these forests in the medieval period #HESsupported #SCARF #SESARF

There's a record of planks from Dalkeith being sent to Newhaven when the 'Michael' was being built. One of the Dalkeith Old Oaks is traditionally named 'The Michael' - it may be regrowth from 16thC coppicing, based on dendro-ages of other Dalkeith oaks #thicktrunktuesday #SESOD

The Michael, ancient oak at Dalkeith Park #Scotland.
I’ve built an oak tree-ring chronology here, from deadwood, which extends back to the mid 16thC. The Michael was not included in study but is probably of that oldest group.

Thanks @DigItScotland for an empowering webinar by Maiya @TheDigVenturers on 'Maximising media coverage'. Tree-rings can make the headlines eg from my 2020 #SESOD St Giles work, press release via @HistEnvScot Full story https://t.co/qGcKS6hc3y Will think on for new stories 🌳🙏

An absolute highlight of my career as a dendrochronologist - undertaken through my #SESOD - South East Scotland Oak Dendrochronology Project - funded by @HistEnvScot - to develop the oak tree-ring record for this region. More exciting results yet to come as the project continues.
#OTD in 1637 a riot erupted outside St Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh, thanks to Jenny Geddes & her stool-throwing protest.
We don't have a blog about that, but we DO have a blog from @Dendrochronicle on the interesting origins of the tower in the High Kirk https://t.co/IgNzRqkyNJ
