News: Simret withdraws lawsuit challenging #NEBE decision on five #Tigray constituencies; Getachew Reda says dispute requires political resolution
The Tigray Democratic Solidarity (#Simret) party has withdrawn its lawsuit challenging a decision by the National Election Board of #Ethiopia (NEBE) concerning five electoral constituencies in Tigray, party leader #Getachew_Reda confirmed to Addis Standard today.
Getachew, who is also Advisor to the Ethiopian Pm, said the party submitted a formal request to the Federal High Court seeking to discontinue the case, arguing that documents presented during earlier proceedings showed that what had been described as a decision of the House of Federation did not constitute a formal institutional ruling made through constitutional procedures.
According to him, the document produced in court indicated that the matter reflected the position of officials rather than a decision adopted through the House’s legally required……

News update: #Tigray Democratic Solidarity rejects HoF decision, threatens to boycott elections and similar ‘illegal acts’ if unresolved
Tigray Democratic Solidarity (#Simret) has called on the House of #Federation (HoF) to reconsider its decision to remove electoral constituencies in districts previously under the Tigray region administration, describing the move as “unconstitutional” and warning that it undermines Ethiopia’s federal system.
In a letter addressed to both the House of Federation and the National Election Board of Ethiopia (#NEBE), Simret said the decision constitutes an act that “undermines the country’s constitutional order, crushes institutional independence, and effectively declares ‘constitutional anarchy’.”
Citing Article 62 of the FDRE Constitution, the party argued that the House of Federation’s powers are limited to constitutional interpretation and the resolution of regional boundary disputes.
Simret further argued that boundary disputes must be resolved exclusively under Article 48 of the Constitution and finalized through a referendum. Until such a process is completed, the order that elections be administered by the federal government amounts to “a blatant attempt at Administrative Annexation (the seizure of regional administration by force),” the statement said.

News: #NEBE officially recognizes Simret as Regional Political Party
The National Election Board of #Ethiopia (NEBE) has officially registered the #Tigray Democratic Solidarity (#Simret) as a regional political party, led by Getachew Reda, former Tigray Interim President and current Horn of Africa Advisor to the Prime Minister.
Simret was founded by former senior officials of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (#TPLF), electing former Tigray Interim President and current Horn of Africa Advisor to the Prime Minister, Getachew Reda, as its president.
The party, which initially received temporary registration from the National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE), seeks to present a fresh political vision for Tigray while addressing criticisms historically directed at both the TPLF and the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF).
Speaking to Addis Standard, Professor Kindeya Gebrehiwot, Simret’s External Relations Coordinator, said the party is founded on “a mindset that takes into account the current state of thought our world has reached” and “considers the overall situation of the region and the country.”
The party’s founding conference was held in Addis Abeba on 24 October 2025, where it elected its leadership structure, including the president, vice presidents, seven executive committee members, and 31 council members. Getachew Reda was elected president, Nega Assefa as first vice president, Haftu Kiros as vice president, and Seble Kahsay as head of the party office. Gebrehiwot Gebresilassie and Abrehaley Abera were elected chairperson and deputy chairperson of the Control and Inspection Commission, respectively.

#Ethiopia: Simret Party warns “dangerous rhetoric” by intellectuals, religious leaders threatens #Pretoria agreement
The #Tigray Democratic Solidarity Party (#Simret) has warned that what it calls “dangerous rhetoric” from some intellectuals and religious leaders is undermining the implementation of the Pretoria Agreement and threatening to destabilize the region’s fragile peace process.
In a statement issued Sunday, the party accused certain intellectuals and religious figures—whom it says previously “played a role in inciting the displacement of the people of Tigray” of continuing to disrupt ongoing efforts by “spreading rhetoric and taking irresponsible actions” against the constitutional order.
Simret said these actors “have not repented of the past” and are now obstructing the safe return of displaced communities from Western Tigray. The party said progress has been slowed by “internal and external actors unhappy with the agreement,” including those using inflammatory language that it argues risks derailing the peace process.
The statement came following a widely circulated appearance by academic and commentator Dagnachew Assefa in which he addressed members of #Tekeze_Zeb, a paramilitary group aligned with the Federal Government in #Western_Tigray, while dressed in military clothing and carrying a firearm.
According to the party, the federally led process to return #IDPs from Western Tigray “has reached a better stage,” but the forces that “invaded and occupied the area” — and were required under the Pretoria Agreement to withdraw — are now “disseminating statements that obstruct the commenced peace implementation process” and “slandering the federal officials executing the process in the media.”

Even if someone believes that #Getachew_Reda and his party, #SIMRET, are doing or saying something wrong, neither he nor SIMRET currently holds real power in Tigray or controls what is happening on the ground. The #TPLF remains the entity that actually wields power in the region.
Therefore, Getachew Reda’s and SIMRET’s influence is almost negligible compared to that of the TPLF.
To the TPLF and its supporters:-
please stop shifting blame onto others, using their perceived mistakes or statements as a shield. Instead, acknowledge and correct the serious wrongdoings you yourselves are committing—actions that continue to put Tigray and its people at grave risk. The price Tigrayans have already paid because of your errors is enormous. Do not make them pay even more.

News: #Tigray Democratic Solidarity (#Simret) party elects Getachew Reda as president at founding conference
Addis Abeba – The newly formed Tigray Democratic Solidarity (Simret) Party, established by former senior leaders of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (#TPLF), has elected Ato Getachew Reda as its President during its founding conference held in Addis Abeba on 24 October 2025.
During the inaugural conference, the party elected its leadership structure, including the President, Vice Presidents, seven Executive Committee members, and 31 Council members. Accordingly, Ato Getachew Reda was elected President, Nega Assefa as First Vice President, Haftu Kiros as Vice President, and Seble Kahsay as Head of the Party Office.
Similarly, Ato Gebrehiwot Gebresilassie was elected Chairperson of the Control and Inspection Commission, while Abrehaley Abera was elected as Deputy Chairperson.
The conference was attended by the party’s founding members, representatives of the ruling Prosperity Party, and invited guests.
In his opening address, Ato Getachew said the decision to form the new party was driven by what he described as “problems within the TPLF.” He added that although the party had initially planned to hold its founding conference in the Tigray region, this was not possible because “lawlessness has peaked” in the region.
He further stated that the party has so far registered more than 5,600 members, though many were unable to attend the founding conference due to security concerns.
Speaking to FM Si, Ato Getachew emphasized that “we must work to protect the existence of the people of Tigray,” adding that the party will strive to uphold national interests and implement its strategic plans effectively.

News: #Tigrai Independence Party denies joining new alliance unveiled by Lt. Gen. Tsadkan as #Baytona, #Arena, #Simret confirm participation
The Tigrai Independence Party (#TIP) has denied claims that it joined a newly announced political alliance unveiled by Lt. Gen. Tsadkan Gebretensae, which he said aims to bring political change in Tigray. “We will hold a special meeting to decide on the matter. But we are not part of an alliance of that form,” TIP Chairman Dejen Mezgebe told Addis Standard.
While TIP distanced itself from the initiative, Baytona, Arena Tigray, and the newly formed Simret Party - led by PM Abiy Ahmed’s advisor Getachew Reda - confirmed their participation.
The alliance, described by Tsadkan as a response to growing public demand for peace and democratic transition, also includes himself and Brig. Gen. Teklay Ashebir. According to Simret’s Kindeya Gebrehiwet, the alliance is grounded in three goals: avoiding renewed war, implementing the Pretoria Agreement, and preparing for democratic elections.
The announcement of the alliance came as Lt. Gen. Tadesse Worede, President of the Tigray Interim Administration, cautioned Simret against any involvement in armed struggle, urging the party to commit to peaceful political engagement. He also warned against alleged ties to armed groups in Afar, stressing the importance of dialogue and restraint.

#Tigray interim president warns #Simret Party against armed activity, urges political dialogue
Lt. Gen. Tadesse Worede, president of the Tigray Interim Administration, has cautioned the Simret Party, the newly formed political party led by Getachew Reda, PM Abiy Ahmed’s advisor on East African Affairs, against involvement in armed struggle, urging the group to commit to peaceful political engagement.
In an interview with local media, Lt. Gen. Tadesse confirmed reports that the Simret Party is preparing to open offices in Tigray, stating that no formal request has been received. “If they complete the required procedures with the election board, they can proceed,” he said.
However, he expressed concern over the party’s alleged ties to armed groups in Afar, warning, “They must not act as spoilers.” Citing a recent deadly clash near the border, Lt. Gen. Tadesse called for political dialogue and restraint and called on federal and regional actors to support efforts to resolve tensions through peaceful means.

#Tigray interim admin, #Simret Party trade accusations over deadly border #attack
The Tigray Interim Administration has accused the Simret Party, a new political party led by former President Getachew Reda, of carrying out an armed attack on a Tigray security unit in Mlazat, Southeastern Tigray, bordering the Afar region, which resulted in the death of a member of the Tigray Security Forces.
The Simret Party has denied the allegation as “baseless” and, in turn, accused the interim administration’s peace and security office of “corruption and regional destabilization.”
According to a statement released by the administration’s Peace and Security Bureau, the attack took place on 30 July and claimed the life of Hailu Anday Kindeya, a member of the region’s security forces. The administration claimed the assault was “orchestrated by Simret Party operatives” under the pretense of political activism.

#Tigray has bled enough. Another war whether led by Eritrea or @AbiyAhmedAli will only deepen the wounds. #TPLF, #SIMRET & other political parties must prioritize people over power. The time is now to reject war & commit to healing, peace,& rebuilding.
