As the afternoon descends upon Konoha, two figures cast long shadows across the top of Hokage Mountain. They hold two different mailpieces in their hands, both written in Sasuke’s neat script. Whereas the first letter is clearly a simple mission progress report bound in an old scroll, the other one is… not quite expected. Instead of a scroll, there was an unaddressed envelope tied to one of Sasuke’s hawks.
Sasuke… doesn’t use envelopes. Sasuke… doesn’t seal his letters. In fact, Sasuke Uchiha doesn’t tend to “write letters home.” He’s just not that kinda guy, y’know? This must be an emergency. Obviously.
There’s a handwritten letter within the envelope. With the seal broken, the neat script of Sasuke’s handwriting spells is a heartfelt outpouring from Sasuke Uchiha, it seems, is a man more familiar with wielding a sword than a pen. “I think of you every spring day,” he writes, the words carrying the weight of unspoken yearning. It's a confession so unlike Sasuke, it could make a statue do a double-take. It ends simply: “I love you, Sakura.”
The realization dawns that this vulnerable confession has landed in the wrong hands.
“Ooooooooooh, boy. Poor teme is gonna be soooo upset when he finds out I got my hands on this.”
Naruto’s smile breaks across his face and his eyes narrow as he turns to a shocked Hinata. Naruto is the resident expert in "How did I get myself into this?" situations, not Sasuke. Of all people, he would have never imagined Sasuke – Mr. “I’m-Better-Than-You-At-Everything-Dead-Last” – to mess up letter addresses, mistaking his hawk for Sakura’s. Ah, he cannot wait to make fun of Sasuke for being an absolute SAP! Naruto can't help but imagine Sasuke, brow furrowed in concentration, as he tries to unfuck this mess – the mental image of Sasuke taking the written test at their first Chunin exams as Team 7 comes to mind.
With Hinata by his side, they hatch a plan to deliver Sakura’s letter to her in the most embarrassing fashion possible for Sasuke. Hinata, ever the pragmatist, suggests, "Why don't we just use a shadow clone to drop it off? I’m sure Sakura-chan would appreciate it." To which Naruto replies, "But that’s no fun!"
Still, Hinata wins out and Operation Cupid Ninja is born. Naruto's clones end up causing more chaos than a cat in a yarn store. One clone gets caught in a tug-of-war with Akamaru over a piece of meat, while another accidentally enrolls in a dance-off against Killer Bee, who declares, "Yo, this clone's got moves!"
Finally, with night encroaching upon Konoha, they arrive at Sakura's door: Hinata and Naruto and eighty-seven clones. The handoff is not any better, with Naruto tripping over his own feet and Hinata catching the letter in a graceful save and the fakest smile Sakura has ever seen on her.
Sakura stands at her doorway, trying her best to will her eyeballs to stay in her skull as she shuts the door behind her. One of her lower eyelids is twitching and it is not helping her already frayed nerves. She’s been expecting a response from Sasuke for weeks. Now, thanks to Naruto’s hijinks, Sakura is left with a folded up, worn letter with ripped edges.
The handwriting is too neat to be mistaken for anyone else, its lines too straight and curves practiced. The ink is perfectly thickened where Sasuke’s script pressed harder into the parchment. A great deal of care was put into writing this.
‘If only I could make out what it says,’ Sakura figures.
She plops herself onto her living room couch, eagerly trying to piece together Sasuke’s response to her message from the pieces. Sakura’s been trying to keep cool since her last risky message to Sasuke. She begged him to come back, pathetically displaying her love to a man who couldn’t be farther away from her. Sakura mentioned that winters were hard to bear without him, that she was willing to find comfort in someone else’s home if Sasuke’s heart was still too full. Her ultimatum was simple: tell me if my feelings are requited or I’ll assume they aren’t.
“Sakura,” a raspy voice sounds in the dark.
She jumps at her name. The evening twilight colors filter through her window, painting Sasuke’s faces in brilliant golden hues, casting deeper shadows on his dark hair. There are beads of sweat at his brow and his chest is too still, like he is stifling the physiological response to running across the continent like a madman trying to beat the speed of his own hawk.
Sasuke, ever the man of few words, simply states, "I meant every word, Sakura." His declaration cuts through the silence, “I love you, too.”
Yeah, that message was definitely not meant for Naruto.
