DAY SIX: Grand Gesture

It’s drizzling in Yugakure. The rain falls like a curtain, rustling against the sandy coast where Sakura is trying to work. The salt air mixes with the damp earth, creating a scent that's refreshing but overwhelming. It clings to her hair, her skin, her nose. It’s everywhere but she’s trying to push through the discomfort. Sakura is here for research, gathering a rare mold that seems to grow on dried out algae. She was able to isolate particles of it in one of the village’s famed hot springs, and now needs to gather more cells to compare their similarities and differences. Maybe the mold has mutated in the spring. Maybe it is identical to the originating mold from the ocean. For Sakura, there’s only one way to find out: harvest at least a pound of algae, which averages into less than 5 grams of mold, which will denature into about a milligram of active material. If she did her math right, Sakura should have a few million cells to review before generating a representative sample from the beach. She’ll probably have enough to culture before throwing under the microscopes. Probably.
Still, Sakura is having the worst time focusing on her calculations. Gathering algae is proving to be more arduous than she has anticipated. She’s done this work before, but something about this feels like it’s eating her alive. The constant bend and stretch along the rocky coast send waves of discomfort through the pain receptors in Sakura's back, a dull ache that seems to echo the rhythm of the crashing waves, pulling her attention away from the task at hand. Her cloak, meant to shield her from the elements, has done too good of a job protecting her from the cool coastal air. It’s now a prison of heat, trapping the humidity against her skin and causing sweat to gather at the nape of her neck, where it’s beginning to chafe.
Sakura's eyes, rimmed with red from the irritation of salt and sand, scan the algae-laden rocks, her focus unwavering despite the discomfort. She can’t even rub at the delicate skin under her eyes since her gloves are caked with sand and seaweed. The rain soaks through her clothes and her hair, leaving her trapped in a limbo of being too hot within the confines of her cloak and too cold without it. There’s sand everywhere, under her clothes, under her mesh, in her hair.
She’s ready to scream, ready to give into the anger and irritation with the temper of her bygone youth. Who the hell told her to try to work during her travels with Sasuke? What kind of masochistic idiot decides to spend the day away from the tall, moody, handsome asshole they’ve been accompanying across the continent? When is she going to realize that her stubbornness is going to get in the way of figuring out if what she’s been feeling from Sasuke is real?
Are the smiles he gives her actual signs of affection, or is he just tolerating her? Does he not fight back when she argues with him because Sasuke actually trusts her, or does he just not want to deal with her temper? Is he actually moving his sleeping bag closer and closer to hers as the days go on, or is it all in her head?
‘I guess I’ll never know,’ she thinks.
But then, the world suddenly stills. The rain ceases its assault against Sakura, the wind calms, the chill in the air dissipates. It is all replaced by a warm, pulsing glow. Confused, Sakura looks up, only to find herself enveloped in a fiery purple cloak of chakra. It looks like… a hand?
Her heart skips a beat. Sakura whips her head up less than a second later, eyes wide as the knowledge crashes over her like a wave meeting her shore. Sasuke stands before her, his expression one of quiet determination. The chakra emanating from him wraps around Sakura, gentle in its power, cradling her in his warmth. He's using an immense amount of chakra, subjecting himself to what must be incredible pain, all for the sake of her comfort. For Sasuke, this is as grand a gesture as he can make, speaking beyond what words can say.
“I’m almost done,” she starts. Sakura doesn’t want to look away now that she’s seen him, doesn’t want to break their eye contact, doesn’t want to break the delicate moment with her cursed touch.
“There’s no rush,” Sasuke replies, his voice steady and calm. In his dark gray eyes, Sakura sees a type of care and affection that seems nostalgic. His eyes look like she’s in pain, almost fainting on the battlefield at sixteen. His eyes look at her like she’s in pain, searching for him in an exploded underground lair. His eyes look at her like she’s in pain, begging him not to go at thirteen. His eyes look like she’s in pain, fighting for her life in the middle of a forest at twelve. One look, reserved only for her, seems to be enough for them to cut through the ages.
Surrounded by Sasuke's chakra, the discomfort of the rain, the itch of the salt, and the ache in her back all seem to fade away. It's not just the physical relief that his presence brings; it's the realization of the depth of his feelings for her. Sasuke has chosen to bear pain for her sake, willingly chosen to prioritize her in the smallest yet biggest of ways. He doesn’t tease her. He doesn’t rush her work. He doesn’t tear her down.
Because, in Sasuke’s mind, Sakura could never be a burden; she’s inevitable for him.
Sakura’s world tilts with realization. It's a moment of vulnerability on his part, a silent confession of care that doesn't need words to be understood. For Sakura, it's a moment of clarity in the midst of his storm, like a beacon shining her way home.
And as they turn to head back to the inn, Sakura talks to Sasuke about the algae and the mold and her hypothesis and her calculations. She fills the silence in vain to distract Sasuke, a red herring away from the jittery feeling bubbling up from deep in her belly. She doesn’t know what’s happening between them, too scared to call it ‘love’ outright, but Sakura can’t wait.

The sun is dipping low on the horizon, casting long shadows across their small camp. Sasuke busies himself by setting up the perimeter with traps, ensuring the camp is safe for sleeping. Sakura, with a map unfurled in her hands, traces a route with her finger, her brow furrowed while she is deep in thought. She keeps looking up and silently counting something. Inevitably, she’ll quickly shake her head and restart her work on the map. Sasuke watches her from the corner of his eye, silently witnessing the confusion etch Sakura’s face into further and further confusion.
Their goal is Yugakure. The village hidden in hot springs is known for their medics. Sakura has never had the opportunity to take an extended leave to learn their ways. Now is her chance to learn new skills! Meet new experts! Practice new medicine!
Yet, the path is unfamiliar. Sakura’s never really been this far south. She keeps her eyes on her map. She counted days. She counted miles. And yet, Sakura's confidence wavers as she finally realizes they've strayed far from the intended route.
The realization lands like a boulder on a calm lake surface. Sakura puts away her map and lets their campfire bore sunspots onto her eyesight. How could she be so stupid? She recalls countless missions from their genin days, where a wrong turn or a misread map would draw Sasuke's ire, especially when Naruto was the culprit. She swallows hard, trying to push down the embarrassment, trying to dry her eyes from any trickling tears. Sasuke does not like wasting his time, especially when traveling. Sakura remembers being twelve years old, listening to Sasuke argue with Naruto about how dangerous it is to dawdle around unincorporated forests, how it can put targets on their backs, how only a dead-last idiot couldn’t read a map.
She’s older now, but Sakura still braces herself for Sasuke’s dramatic mood swing. She’s ready for it: the sharp words, the impatient sigh, the cold disappointment, the tight grimace.
She takes a deep breath, shaking off the nerves. The scary Sasuke-kun in the back of head was just a kid, just a scared little boy with a short time and everything to lose. Sakura is a grown adult; she can do this. It is not her fault. She has been having too much fun traveling with Sasuke. They’ve spent the past week or so talking, fighting, even joking around. If she was still a little girl with stars in her eyes, Sakura would swear upon every single eyeshadow and lip gloss she owned that Sasuke liked her back.
Shoulders squared, she turns to Sasuke, her voice tinged with apprehension. "Sasuke-kun, I... I think I've gotten us lost.
“What do you mean ‘lost?’” he says, trying to catch her eye. Sakura keeps breaking their eye contact, not quite ready to see the depth of his disappointment in Sasuke’s gaze.
“We went too far south. We're going to have to reroute.”
“Hm?”
“I… Yeah, I think it's going to add another two days to our trip."
She waits, her heart pounding, for the rebuke, for the frustration, for the dramatic eyeroll.
But it doesn't come. She looks up, thinking that maybe Sasuke’s ire is quieter now, maybe more dangerous in adulthood. Instead, Sasuke merely shrugs his bad shoulder, his gaze meeting hers. "I don't mind getting lost with you," he says, and the simplicity of the statement, the acceptance and the underlying warmth, takes Sakura by surprise.
The tension in her shoulders dissipates in her next exhale, and Sakura can see the corners of Sasuke’s mouth tug at the corners of his lips in the slightest of ways. If Sakura didn’t know him as well as she does, she would have never caught it.
That night, Sakura lays in her sleeping bag with a pounding heart, her head spinning out of control. Sasuke thinks of her as his companion! His friend! His… more than friend? She can’t tell what’s happening between her and Sasuke, but she knows she won’t be getting any sleep tonight.

As the afternoon descends upon Konoha, two figures cast long shadows across the top of Hokage Mountain. They hold two different mailpieces in their hands, both written in Sasuke’s neat script. Whereas the first letter is clearly a simple mission progress report bound in an old scroll, the other one is… not quite expected. Instead of a scroll, there was an unaddressed envelope tied to one of Sasuke’s hawks.
Sasuke… doesn’t use envelopes. Sasuke… doesn’t seal his letters. In fact, Sasuke Uchiha doesn’t tend to “write letters home.” He’s just not that kinda guy, y’know? This must be an emergency. Obviously.
There’s a handwritten letter within the envelope. With the seal broken, the neat script of Sasuke’s handwriting spells is a heartfelt outpouring from Sasuke Uchiha, it seems, is a man more familiar with wielding a sword than a pen. “I think of you every spring day,” he writes, the words carrying the weight of unspoken yearning. It's a confession so unlike Sasuke, it could make a statue do a double-take. It ends simply: “I love you, Sakura.”
The realization dawns that this vulnerable confession has landed in the wrong hands.
“Ooooooooooh, boy. Poor teme is gonna be soooo upset when he finds out I got my hands on this.”
Naruto’s smile breaks across his face and his eyes narrow as he turns to a shocked Hinata. Naruto is the resident expert in "How did I get myself into this?" situations, not Sasuke. Of all people, he would have never imagined Sasuke – Mr. “I’m-Better-Than-You-At-Everything-Dead-Last” – to mess up letter addresses, mistaking his hawk for Sakura’s. Ah, he cannot wait to make fun of Sasuke for being an absolute SAP! Naruto can't help but imagine Sasuke, brow furrowed in concentration, as he tries to unfuck this mess – the mental image of Sasuke taking the written test at their first Chunin exams as Team 7 comes to mind.
With Hinata by his side, they hatch a plan to deliver Sakura’s letter to her in the most embarrassing fashion possible for Sasuke. Hinata, ever the pragmatist, suggests, "Why don't we just use a shadow clone to drop it off? I’m sure Sakura-chan would appreciate it." To which Naruto replies, "But that’s no fun!"
Still, Hinata wins out and Operation Cupid Ninja is born. Naruto's clones end up causing more chaos than a cat in a yarn store. One clone gets caught in a tug-of-war with Akamaru over a piece of meat, while another accidentally enrolls in a dance-off against Killer Bee, who declares, "Yo, this clone's got moves!"
Finally, with night encroaching upon Konoha, they arrive at Sakura's door: Hinata and Naruto and eighty-seven clones. The handoff is not any better, with Naruto tripping over his own feet and Hinata catching the letter in a graceful save and the fakest smile Sakura has ever seen on her.
Sakura stands at her doorway, trying her best to will her eyeballs to stay in her skull as she shuts the door behind her. One of her lower eyelids is twitching and it is not helping her already frayed nerves. She’s been expecting a response from Sasuke for weeks. Now, thanks to Naruto’s hijinks, Sakura is left with a folded up, worn letter with ripped edges.
The handwriting is too neat to be mistaken for anyone else, its lines too straight and curves practiced. The ink is perfectly thickened where Sasuke’s script pressed harder into the parchment. A great deal of care was put into writing this.
‘If only I could make out what it says,’ Sakura figures.
She plops herself onto her living room couch, eagerly trying to piece together Sasuke’s response to her message from the pieces. Sakura’s been trying to keep cool since her last risky message to Sasuke. She begged him to come back, pathetically displaying her love to a man who couldn’t be farther away from her. Sakura mentioned that winters were hard to bear without him, that she was willing to find comfort in someone else’s home if Sasuke’s heart was still too full. Her ultimatum was simple: tell me if my feelings are requited or I’ll assume they aren’t.
“Sakura,” a raspy voice sounds in the dark.
She jumps at her name. The evening twilight colors filter through her window, painting Sasuke’s faces in brilliant golden hues, casting deeper shadows on his dark hair. There are beads of sweat at his brow and his chest is too still, like he is stifling the physiological response to running across the continent like a madman trying to beat the speed of his own hawk.
Sasuke, ever the man of few words, simply states, "I meant every word, Sakura." His declaration cuts through the silence, “I love you, too.”
Yeah, that message was definitely not meant for Naruto.
