The sun is dipping low on the horizon, casting long shadows across their small camp. Sasuke busies himself by setting up the perimeter with traps, ensuring the camp is safe for sleeping. Sakura, with a map unfurled in her hands, traces a route with her finger, her brow furrowed while she is deep in thought. She keeps looking up and silently counting something. Inevitably, she’ll quickly shake her head and restart her work on the map. Sasuke watches her from the corner of his eye, silently witnessing the confusion etch Sakura’s face into further and further confusion.
Their goal is Yugakure. The village hidden in hot springs is known for their medics. Sakura has never had the opportunity to take an extended leave to learn their ways. Now is her chance to learn new skills! Meet new experts! Practice new medicine!
Yet, the path is unfamiliar. Sakura’s never really been this far south. She keeps her eyes on her map. She counted days. She counted miles. And yet, Sakura's confidence wavers as she finally realizes they've strayed far from the intended route.
The realization lands like a boulder on a calm lake surface. Sakura puts away her map and lets their campfire bore sunspots onto her eyesight. How could she be so stupid? She recalls countless missions from their genin days, where a wrong turn or a misread map would draw Sasuke's ire, especially when Naruto was the culprit. She swallows hard, trying to push down the embarrassment, trying to dry her eyes from any trickling tears. Sasuke does not like wasting his time, especially when traveling. Sakura remembers being twelve years old, listening to Sasuke argue with Naruto about how dangerous it is to dawdle around unincorporated forests, how it can put targets on their backs, how only a dead-last idiot couldn’t read a map.
She’s older now, but Sakura still braces herself for Sasuke’s dramatic mood swing. She’s ready for it: the sharp words, the impatient sigh, the cold disappointment, the tight grimace.
She takes a deep breath, shaking off the nerves. The scary Sasuke-kun in the back of head was just a kid, just a scared little boy with a short time and everything to lose. Sakura is a grown adult; she can do this. It is not her fault. She has been having too much fun traveling with Sasuke. They’ve spent the past week or so talking, fighting, even joking around. If she was still a little girl with stars in her eyes, Sakura would swear upon every single eyeshadow and lip gloss she owned that Sasuke liked her back.
Shoulders squared, she turns to Sasuke, her voice tinged with apprehension. "Sasuke-kun, I... I think I've gotten us lost.
“What do you mean ‘lost?’” he says, trying to catch her eye. Sakura keeps breaking their eye contact, not quite ready to see the depth of his disappointment in Sasuke’s gaze.
“We went too far south. We're going to have to reroute.”
“Hm?”
“I… Yeah, I think it's going to add another two days to our trip."
She waits, her heart pounding, for the rebuke, for the frustration, for the dramatic eyeroll.
But it doesn't come. She looks up, thinking that maybe Sasuke’s ire is quieter now, maybe more dangerous in adulthood. Instead, Sasuke merely shrugs his bad shoulder, his gaze meeting hers. "I don't mind getting lost with you," he says, and the simplicity of the statement, the acceptance and the underlying warmth, takes Sakura by surprise.
The tension in her shoulders dissipates in her next exhale, and Sakura can see the corners of Sasuke’s mouth tug at the corners of his lips in the slightest of ways. If Sakura didn’t know him as well as she does, she would have never caught it.
That night, Sakura lays in her sleeping bag with a pounding heart, her head spinning out of control. Sasuke thinks of her as his companion! His friend! His… more than friend? She can’t tell what’s happening between her and Sasuke, but she knows she won’t be getting any sleep tonight.
