Well for all you #SSWE people out there. Today's 00z EPS showed all members (100%) showing a 10mb U wind reversal over the north pole around 11/28 to 11/29. The implications, are enhanced blocking risk in December and the possibility that the SPV will be further receptive to weakening later in the Winter which could influence the mid/late Winter.
With regards to the possible #SSWE 41 of 50 (82%) 12z EPS members show a U wind reversal at 10mb. But it is going to be close for an official declaration. Either way looks like the SPV will rebound some after this weakening. But perhaps the pump will be primed for a bigger SSWE later in the winter?
The polar vortex grows disrupted when the PV’s winds weakens or even potential reverses which causes the Jet stream to Dip south into the Mid-Latitudes with colder air.
This is what we call a Sudden Stratospheric Warming event or #SSWE.
48/50 12z EPS members show a 10mb U wind reversal. This is 96% of the members! The day that has the most negative members is 11/29. #SSWE
A little less support today in the EPS for a #SSWE 28/50 members or 56% showing a reversal. Still more than half but down from yesterday. Will have to watch to see how this trends.
Today's 12z op ECMWF and EPS mean both show the 10mb U wind turning negative, meaning a change to an easterly wind direction over the polar regions and an #SSWE with 41 of 50 EPS members (82%) showing this reversal with 11/25 the day with the most negative members. Sudden Stratospheric Warming Events, can weaken the tropospheric polar vortex, allowing for increased high latitude blocking (-AO) and the enhanced risk for arctic air discharge into the mid-latitudes (North America, Europe, East Asia). A late November SSWE is relatively rare, and COULD help favor a cold start to meteorological winter(December). The last November SSWE was in 1968.
A #SSWE (Sudden Stratospheric Warming Event) seems likely at the end of the month. 12z EPS ensembles has 78% of it's members on the U 10mb zonal anomaly dipping down near 0 with some going negative.
This will allow an increase blocking of High Pressure over the North Pole which will force colder temperatures to mid-latitudes (including the lower 48) sometime in December.
The 12z EPS shows 39 of 50 members (78%) now showing a U wind reversal at 10mb constituting an official #SSWE with 11/25 or 11/26 the most likely day for it to happen.
Todays 00z EPS had 18 of the 50 members (36%) showing a 10mb U wind reversal by 00z 11/26. Even if we dont get a reversal and an official #SSWE, this at least implies a weakened SPV and an increased risk for polar blocking and cold risk. Of course still unknowns and no guarantees. Worth following though.
For those that follow #SSWE sudden stratospheric warming events. The 00z 11/9 EC46 run showed 55 of 100 (55%)members showing a -U 10mb zonal anomaly at least one day over the run through 12/25. The day with the most negative U wind members are 11/26-11/27. This would be an early season occurrence of this phenomena and could favor enhanced/increased blocking (cold risk for mid-latitudes) later on in December and perhaps into January. Something to follow.
