3/7 Despite providing an estimated $62 trillion to the economy each year (@NickDav23841916 #swstwittersymp2018), we are losing wetlands at an alarming rate. #Louisiana has the highest rate of wetland loss in the country - a football field every 1.2 hours! See photo for details.

@l_marazzi @AnnaPuchkoff @swamp_prof @wetlandsoils @KellyReiss8 @ashleyribooth The current plan is to repeat this at some point - maybe annually, maybe every other year. We'll chat with the SWS office, see what the feedback from #SWSTwitterSymp2018 is like, and take it from there...
In my opinion, the most interesting thing about wetlands is how complex (and valuable) they are, and how there is still so much to understand🧐🌎. The #SWSTwitterSymp2018 was such a fun way to learn about ongoing research!
5/5 #SWSTwitterSymp2018 Findings suggest variability in determination of condition stressing importance of considering #wetlands across scales (e.g., biological, spatial, temporal) and as complex systems for monitoring and management decisions. Thanks for reading!

4/5 #SWSTwitterSymp2018 Methods generally indicated same # of wetlands per condition class (e.g., good, fair, poor), but there was variability for individual wetlands, which may have scores across categories, suggesting differential responses of system components to stress.

1/5 #SWSTwitterSymp2018 Glad to be tweeting about #wetlands! We set out to test consistency in wetland condition determination from the landscape to biological community scale, using a variety of methods, with implications for wetland monitoring and assessment. #@ufWetlands

5/5 #SWSTwitterSymp2018 What now? You: (1) Use the synthesis https://t.co/ilWLJA7Ibt. But use it critically. Feed back & help us improve future versions. (2) Fill evidence gaps. Publish results, esp for “failed” interventions. Me: Synthesize evidence for all wetlands! Thanks. Qs?
3/5 #SWSTwitterSymp2018 Results 1: Geography. Lots of evidence from Europe (esp UK 🇬🇧) and N America (esp CAN 🇨🇦). Geographical gaps in tropical peat swamps, Russia, Africa, South America – despite large areas of peatland. Interactive map: https://t.co/6dC0wkPIr5

2/5 #SWSTwitterSymp2018 Methods: Create list of all conservation actions > search scientific literature for tests of those actions > summarize evidence in short, simple paragraphs > review and assess > publish synthesis https://t.co/ilWLJA7Ibt or https://t.co/Ua9FR7cJxf

1/5 #SWSTwitterSymp2018 In a changing world, many wetlands need conservation. Efficient & effective conservation should be based on scientific evidence. With @ConservEvidence, I am collating studies of actions intended to conserve wetland vegetation. First step: peatlands.

Questions?

4/5 #SWSTwitterSymp2018
P retention differed btw wetlands based on soil properties
PSR threshold of 0.1 differentiated btw P sources & sinks, agreed w/other studies
Maintaining P removal efficiency requires decreasing P load or increasing P sorption capacity via soil amendment

here @l_marazzi presents some interesting insights into the challenges of #wetland restoration

1/5 #SWSTwitterSymp2018 Wetland Restoration is slowly progressing in #Everglades, #MurrayDarlingBasin etc., but with high costs & social & ecological challenges. See our paper: https://t.co/mirsWZOBdx with @MaxFinlayson @EvelynGaiser @JohnKominoski @SwampThingPaul @TerraGellius

2/5 #SWSTwitterSymp2018
No denitrification equivalent for P removal
Soil Fe & Al determine finite P sorption capacity in wetlands
P capacity factor (CF) and P saturation ratio (PSR) applied to determine if treatment cells were P sources, sinks or flowthrough systems

1/5 #SWSTwitterSymp2018
CAN A TREATMENT WETLAND DESIGNED FOR N REMOVAL RETAIN P?
#TNC @Nature_IL maintains a series of ~10 yr old N reduction #treatmentwetlands
We investigated soil capacity 2 retain P & improve #waterquality while reducing #HAB in the Great Lakes #GLRI region

5/5 #SWSTwitterSymp2018 #Transdisciplinary research & integrated river basin plans will help to (partially) restore (some) #wetlands. Decision makers, including citizens, need to strive for #sustainability with the support of qualified #restoration brokers. Thanks! Questions?
