Q: Where do you think the industry will be in 5 or 10 years time?
A: Don’t expect too much change in the short-term. Print is definitely not dying, but focus will continue to shift more towards digital alongside traditional print sales. #SYPIntroToPublishing
Q: Are some degrees more suitable for getting into publishing than others?
A: No! It’s not even necessary to have a degree. Look at the experience you do have and focus on how it’s relevant to the role you’re looking at. #SYPIntroToPublishing
Q: What is the difference between Editorial and Production?
A: Editorial deals with everything up to the final manuscript (normally a word doc, probably full of errors). Production takes that manuscript and turns it into a proper (error-free) book #SYPIntroToPublishing

A lot of working in Rights is preparing for the big conferences, such as Frankfurt and Bologna, which involves organising the stand and designing the catalogue. #SYPIntroToPublishing

You meet a lot of interesting people in publishing. Normally virtually! And one of the best thing about working in the industry is the sense that you are contributing to the wider good. #SYPIntroToPublishing
Managing author relationships is another key aspect of the role. Every author is diverse in their expectations and responsiveness and it takes good communication and diplomacy to ensure things move along smoothly. #SYPIntroToPublishing
Working with freelancers is very different to working with an in-house team as they’re juggling busy schedules just as you are. It’s a very two-way relationship #SYPIntroToPublishing
Artwork poses particular challenges for production editors as digital printing still struggles to produce a high enough quality copy. Lots of liaising with manufactures and printers to find the best fit. #SYPIntroToPublishing
Production is all about taking a book from its raw manuscript and turning it into a physical book. Not forgetting digital versions as well! #SYPIntroToPublishing
