▶️ This two-span sandstone arch stands 60 feet (18 meters) high and spans 148 feet (45 meters) across a narrow ravine, with a width of about 65 feet at its base and 90 feet at the top, composed primarily of resistant Pottsville Formation sandstone interbedded with iron ore veins that impart a reddish hue and enhanced durability.
The structure features a curved, vaulted ceiling with stalactite-like drips and is flanked by smaller secondary arches, caves, and overhanging ledges, creating a sheltered underpass that once served as a natural enclosure.
The surrounding landscape includes lush fern groves, hemlock stands, and additional outcrops like a 15-foot "Indian Head" rock profile, all within a subtropical hardwood forest setting.
▶️ The Natural Bridge formed approximately 200 million years ago during the Triassic-Jurassic period, as part of the broader Appalachian erosion landscape following the assembly of Pangea.
The process began with the deposition of the Pennsylvanian-age Pottsville Sandstone, a thick sequence of cross-bedded fluvial and deltaic sands, in a shallow coastal plain environment along the ancient Appalachian basin.
Over time, the overlying softer shale and coal layers were preferentially eroded by the downcutting action of the New River (a precursor to modern streams in the area), which exploited joints and bedding planes in the rock.
The iron ore (hematite) veins within the sandstone increased its hardness and resistance to chemical and mechanical weathering, preserving the arch while surrounding softer materials were removed through dissolution by acidic rainwater and physical abrasion from flowing water, wind, and gravity-driven mass wasting.
This differential erosion, accelerated during wetter climatic phases in the Mesozoic and Cenozoic eras, gradually hollowed out the underlying cave system and sculpted the spans, with the main arch resulting from roof collapse and subsequent stabilization; ongoing minor erosion continues to shape the feature today.

... This week also saw the completion of the staircase from the #SandstoneArch through the #Gash and down into the #BanquetingHall. The staircase was designed and built by #Volunteers Ted & John and has transformed the access down this steep sloping bedrock passage.
