“He was the first #BritishSoldier to die in action in #HelmandProvince. On 11th June 2006, #Captain #JimPhilippson was killed during a fierce firefight in #Sangin, #Afghanistan, after British troops came under heavy attack.”
Captain Jim Philippson was 29 years old when he died, but in the short span of his military career he had already built a reputation for the qualities that would define his service: determination, professionalism, confidence and an enthusiasm for life that those around him remembered long after he was gone. 🎖️
Born in St Albans, #Hertfordshire, Jim studied at Plymouth University before joining the #Army in January 2001. After completing his training at the #RoyalMilitaryAcademy #Sandhurst, he was commissioned into the #RoyalArtillery later that year. His abilities quickly became apparent, and after his Young Officers’ Course at Larkhill, he was selected to serve with 29 Commando Regiment Royal Artillery.
Commando service demanded more than physical strength. Jim embraced the challenge of selection and, according to his commanding officer, demonstrated mental robustness alongside his physical stamina. During his time with #29CommandoRegiment he served in #Iraq and took part in exercises overseas, including in Norway, the #UnitedStates and Cyprus.
Those who served with him remembered something beyond his professional ability. He could be highly driven without losing his sense of humour, and confident without becoming distant. The Ministry of Defence described him as a gifted, considerate and popular officer whose relaxed manner and enthusiasm earned the respect of his soldiers and peers.
After his time with 29 Commando Regiment, Jim volunteered for another demanding chapter, joining #7ParachuteRegiment #RoyalHorseArtillery. He spent six months in the #FalklandIslands 🇫🇰 before joining the regiment in February 2006 as it prepared for the deployment to Afghanistan.
In Helmand, his responsibilities included training and mentoring members of the #ANA Afghan National Army. His patience, technical knowledge and ability to communicate made him an important part of that work. But on the evening of 11th June, his role changed dramatically.
A #British patrol in the Sangin area had come under sustained #attack, leaving two soldiers seriously wounded. A rapid reaction force was sent to help them. As the force moved towards the embattled patrol, it too came under fire. #CaptainPhilippson was among those caught in the ensuing firefight.
He was #killed during the engagement. Two other British soldiers were seriously injured. His death marked the #first British #fatality caused by enemy action in Helmand, a moment that would come to symbolise the beginning of an extraordinarily intense period of fighting for British forces in the province.
His commanding officer, #LieutenantColonel #DavidHammond, remembered him as a “rising star” who had an enormous amount to offer. His father, Anthony, spoke not only of his son's courage but of his love for military life, saying Jim could never have imagined himself working behind a desk.
Jim Philippson's service had lasted only a few years, yet his influence was felt by the soldiers and friends who knew him. He was remembered not simply for the uniform he wore, but for the personality within it — lively, ambitious, sociable, professional and deeply committed to those around him. 🕊️

Luke joined the Army in 2001. After completing his basic training he joined a #RifleCompany and after a short period joined the #Reconnaissance #Platoon.
He was an enthusiastic soldier, held in high regard by all ranks in the Battalion, who served with distinction on tours of #NorthernIreland, #Iraq and #Afghanistan.
A very social person, Luke lived life to the full. He enjoyed travel and was known by his comrades as a bit of a character. He was a sincere and honest individual with a bright personality.
Luke was a gifted #soldier and #IrishRanger, a first-rate friend to all who knew him. His friendship, open nature and good

At just 18 years old, #Private @JohnathonYoung volunteered to walk at the very front of patrols in #Sangin — searching for the #bombs that could kill the men behind him.
He had not even been in #Afghanistan 🇦🇫 three weeks.
Johnathon had joined the #Army at 17 and served with #3rdBattalion, The #YorkshireRegiment 🏵. In July 2009, when volunteers were needed at short notice to reinforce #British 🇬🇧 troops in Afghanistan, he stepped forward.
On 2nd August, he deployed to #Helmand and was attached to #2ndBattalion #TheRifles in Sangin.
Then came another choice.
Johnathon volunteered to become #LeadScout — one of the most dangerous jobs on patrol.
He would move ahead of the others, helping to find and confirm #IED's "improvised explosive devices" and clear a route through tracks, compounds, and alleyways.
He took that responsibility seriously. Fellow #soldiers remembered him spending his own evenings practising the skills and drills he would need at the front of the #FootPatrol. #PrivateYoung was the #Epitome of an #English warrior.
On 20th August 2009, Afghan election day, Johnathon was helping clear a route near Forward Operating Base #FOB #Wishtan.
He was using a metal detector on the ground known to contain IEDs when he stepped on a concealed device.
He was #killed #instantly.
He was 18 years old. JUST A KID.
Around half an hour later, #Serjeant #PaulMcAleese of #2RIFLES was also killed by an #IED while attempting to recover Johnathon’s body.
Two soldiers lost on the same dangerous stretch of ground.
Johnathon had been a trained soldier for less than a year and had been in Afghanistan for only 18 days. Yet in that short time, he had already placed himself where the danger was greatest.
Not for recognition.
Not for reward.
He simply volunteered to do the job.
His comrades remembered “Youngy” for his humour, #loyalty, and the way he lifted those around him. But his service is remembered for something even more lasting: when others needed someone at the front, Johnathon stepped forward.
Private Johnathon Andrew Young was only 18 when his life ended in Sangin.
But the courage shown in those final weeks has outlived them.
