A woman from #UttarPradesh who eloped with her daughter's fianc days before the wedding has now told the police that she wants to marry the person she ran away with. #SapnaDevi and #Rahul, the runaway duo, surrendered before the police on April 16, incidentally, the same day the daughter was supposed to get married.
While Sapna Devi explained the reasons behind escaping with her daughter's fianc, Rahul told the police how they escaped and why they decided to come back.
The incident took place earlier this month and the two reportedly also took Rs 3.5 lakh in cash and gold and silver jewellery worth around Rs 5 lakh, which were meant for the daughter's wedding.
Rahul and Sapna Devi had been missing since April 6. After a week of remaining untraceable, the duo returned to #Aligarh on Wednesday afternoon.
Sapna Devi has told the police that her husband used to beat her after drinking, and that she faced constant abuse.
She said that after her daughter’s marriage was fixed with Rahul, she used to speak to him whenever he called. Her daughter objected to this and made allegations against her, after which her husband also started threatening her and told her to run away with Rahul, police added.
Notably, the bride-to-be’s father, Jitendra Kumar had filed a complaint after the duo fled, and said Rahul rarely spoke to her daughter but would spend over 20 hours talking to Sapna Devi.
"I live in Bengaluru for work and only recently returned to the village. When I saw this closeness, I grew suspicious," Jitendra had said in his complaint.
While talking to police, Sapna Devi also claimed that he would send only Rs 1,500 and even question her about it.
In his statement given to the police, Rahul described how he eloped with Sapna Devi.
He said that Sapna Devi first reached #Kasganj from Aligarh. From there, they travelled to #Bareilly by bus and then to #Muzaffarpur in #Bihar. After realising that their story was making headlines, they reached the #Nepal border but eventually decided to return.
They came back to Aligarh by bus, got down in #Mathura, and then reached the police station by a private car, police said.

The woman was detained and taken to the police station, where she narrated the reason for taking the extreme step of eloping with her lover, who was going to marry her daughter on April 16.
If they had not eloped, the marriage would have taken place today. A video has surfaced on social media in which the woman is seen crying and narrating the ordeal she had gone through with her husband.
The woman claimed in the video that her husband has levelled false allegations against her. She said that she ran away from the house without taking anything along with her. She said that she took only a single pair of saree and came back with it. She also said that her husband would beat her mercilessly after drinking alcohol.
Narrating her ordeal at the police station, the woman also said that her husband has not done anything for her. She eloped to escape her abusive marriage. She also said that she will not return to her husband under any circumstances and also said that she wants to spend her life with her daughter's groom.
The police claimed that the couple was apprehended near the #Nepal border in #Bihar, after which they brought back to Aligarh for questioning.
The woman refused to return to #Madarak Police Station, she was taken to #Dadaun Police Station.
The police said that the woman who has been identified as #Sapna will be presented before the magistrate as her husband filed a complaint against her for robbery.
Her lover #Rahul's father had also filed a complaint in connection with the matter.
The police registered a missing complaint and initiated an investigation into the matter.
After 10 days, the police detained both, Rahul and Sapna near the Nepal border.
