NEWS: One of America’s oldest natural history museums is days away from closing its doors, and organizers are doing everything they can to save it. Philadelphia’s Academy of Natural Sciences opened its museum to the public in 1828. It survived the Civil War, two world wars, the Great Depression and nearly two centuries of American history. Now, two years short of its 200th anniversary, the public museum is scheduled to close. Its 19 million scientific specimens will remain, but generations of children could lose public access to the institution that houses them. And this is happening while cultural institutions face cuts in Philadelphia and America’s scientific research infrastructure faces extraordinary financial pressure nationwide. Residents are organizing. City Council is getting involved. The mayor and governor are now part of discussions over what comes next. The doors have not closed yet.
