I have copy pasted the message sent to me by a local there and they have explained what is happening there:
βTotal land area of Manipur is approximately 22,000 sq km where the 10% valley area is surrounded by 90% hills from all sides.
Manipur is inhabited by four major groups - The Meiteis, Nagas, Kukis and Meitei Pangals
The valley Meiteis are Hindus while the hill people Naga and Kuki are Christians n the Meitei Pangals are Muslims. After Independence the Meiteis are classified as Generals n the hill people as Scheduled Tribes.
The present issue is mainly from 3 reasons
1)Most of the hills where the Kukis settles, they have poppy plantations and recently the government has been destroying poppy plantations and they are angry at the government for this. They say it is their livelihood- plantation of poppy illegally for processing of heroine and drugs .
2) All land belongs to the government including the hills and forests. Kukis are settled in Myanmar too and because of the Myanmar military issue many Myanmar Kukis are illegal immigrants to the hills of Manipur and the Manipur Kukis are helping the Myanmar Kukis to settle in the hills and making fake aadhar they are becoming citizens illegally. More recent villages were coming up, government found out that the illegal immigrants were encroaching the reserved forest areas n evicting them. But the Kukis are playing victim card n claiming the hills belong to them .
3) The 90% hills land of the hills are protected by MLR &LR act and article 371c (something similar to article 370)as the hill people are Scheduled Tribes, and no one can buy land and settle in tribal land.
So population is sparcely populated in the hills while in the 10% valley land - the land of the indigenous Meiteis-where the Meitei settled since time immemorial and which has more than 2000 years chronicled history, since they are general everyone comes n settles for business and work buying land and permanent settlement.
Anyone and everyone can settle in the valley. The Meiteis are becoming minority in their own land in the very near future. No safeguard of the indigenous Meiteis just because all are General while the same indigenous hill people the tribals get safeguard as STs . And because of this discrimination among the indigenous people of the same state Meiteis are demanding ST status to get constitutional safeguard. But the Tribals are opposing it.
Manipur government has been sitting cold over the issue but recently The high court of Manipur directed the State government to send recommendations to the centre to include Meiteis in ST.
The tribals instead of appealing in Supreme Court have been threatening for agitation which eventually was held yesterday as a supposedly peace rally turned violent from Churachandpur district - kuki populated district where thousands of kuki youths including armed Kuki militants crossed over to the bordering valley District of Bishnupur and burned Meitei houses which killed people including a a 2 yr old infant
After this news became viral Meiteis retaliated
And now itβs second day running
Communal riots are happening all over Manipur between Kukis and Meiteis many houses burned including Hindu temples and Christian churches and many killedβ
And these news travelled so far to turn out Manipuris attacking the Kuki community.
Rectify the false news flooding in all the social platform. Help spread the fact.

Alot of Meitei homes were burnt people were beaten some even shot and slashed with swords, soon the news of attack hit the social media and the innocent Meitei people were furious so in retaliation they started to push back the kuki but what can sticks do against guns
