A Late Riser’s Miserable Breakfast, 1900
For #ScandiSunday I have chosen a 1909 colourful tapestry by Swedish weaver & artist Märta Måås-Fjetterström based on the legend of Saint Stephen. The studio in Båstad where she trained apprentices to use sketching and drawing before using the loom, opened in 1919, still exists.
Scandinavian countries have been producing splendid glassware, both practical and ornamental, for centuries and this owl glass sculpture is a modern example made recently by the Måleras glassworks in the town of the same name in Sweden and designed by Mats Jonasson.

You might have heard of Welsh spoons but Norwegian linked wedding spoons are carved from one unbroken piece of wood. At weddings the groom and bride would sample each dish brought by guest using them, sharing their 1st meal as a married couple.

For #ScandiSunday it is fitting to go to church, today in Norway which has been much on the news lately. True to its Viking heritage the wooden triple-nave church of Lom (c.1170) features many dragon heads on its roofs like those used as figureheads on Viking ships.
This 1811 wood carved and painted beer drinking vessel in the shape of a grouse is perfect for drinking to the Norwegian team tonight and for my #ScandiSunday.

Literature is part of the cultural heritage of a country and, for #ScandiSunday and as my evening art post today, here’s a colourful depiction of Copenhagen with some famous Danish fairy tales. Sleep well.

Learn the names of Swedish mammals with this cute poster dating from the 1960/70s for #ScandiSunday. As a linguist and learning Swedish I find it fascinating to see how some words are similar in North European languages.

There’s been much coverage of Norwegian football fans doing the Viking rowing on social media lately so for #ScandiSunday here is a trio of whimsical wooden Viking characters created by Danish designer Jacob Jensen (1926-2015) who also worked for Bang & Olufsen.

A Little Sætersdalen (now spelt Setesdal, in South Norway) Peasant Girl, 1905
#ScandiSunday is a 10th century Thor’s hammer (known as Mjolnir) pendant discovered in Östergötland, Sweden. It proves that Vikings produced jewels of exquisite craftsmanship which were worn by both men and women to show their status and their love of their heritage.
#ScandiSunday image is the Tjängvide image stone discovered on the Island of Gotland🇸🇪 in 1844 and carved in limestone (1.7 m x 1.2 m).
In the top part is the Viking god Odin riding his 8-legged horse, Sleipnir, towards the gate of Valhalla, the Viking heaven. A Valkyrie

Marie Gudme Leth (1895-1997) was a pioneer in Danish textile design and printing, inspired by nature & 🇩🇰landscape. She revived it as an art form when it was in danger of disappearing, setting up her own business in 1935.

Scandinavian style is not just pared back interiors in neutral colours. In a 19th century farmhouse of a wealthy landowner in Hälsingland folk motives in bright colours adorn the panelled walls of a festivities room, only used for special events and celebrations.

#ScandiSunday is from Norway with a photo of Bergen Bryggen, the 12th century old Hanseatic wharf of the city, a Unesco world heritage site and a welcome pop of colour on an overcast Sunday.
As it is a cooler night today and it’s #scandiSunday here’s a painting of home comfort and peace by an artist famous for his depiction of quiet, intimate interiors. Good night all.

Interior with a Woman Reading
Famous person for my #ScandiSunday is Danish furniture designer Hans Wegner whose iconic Wishbone chair has been in production since 1950. Like a lot of Danish mid century design it is well crafted with the human body in mind, simple in style and made with natural materials.
I chose tonight’s painting for the stunning depiction of its dramatic evening sky and its reflection in the river. It’s also a serene image, just right before bed, and it fits with my #ScandiSunday. Good night.

My #ScandiSunday post today is a design by Danish painter and designer Bjørn Wiinblad (1918-2006) on a ceramic plate. His drawings in his trademark fine tracery are full of exuberant and joyful details and adorn many ceramic items which most people were able to afford in Denmark.
Combining #ScandiSunday and #EasterSpringArt26 I found this charming painting, in the style of Impressionists, of spring blossom which reminds me of my native Normandy and its abundance of apple trees.
