1️⃣ No Oversight, No Guarantees
Public schools operate under strict accountability measures, including standardized testing, curriculum regulations, and financial audits. They must comply with state and federal education laws, special education protections, and civil rights requirements.
Private schools and homeschools, however, do not have the same level of oversight. If they start receiving taxpayer funds through vouchers or education savings accounts (ESAs), who ensures that these schools meet the same standards? Are they required to:
•Administer state-approved assessments?
•Follow state curriculum guidelines?
•Provide services for students with disabilities?
•Report financial expenditures to taxpayers?
Without clear accountability measures, “school choice” risks becoming a blank check for private entities that are not held to the same standards as public schools.
2️⃣ State Funding = State Control
While ESA advocates claim that private schools will remain independent, history has shown that government funding always comes with government strings attached. Once private and homeschool programs accept state money, they could be subject to:
•State-mandated curriculum (potentially undermining religious or alternative education models).
•State testing requirements, limiting the flexibility many private schools currently enjoy.
•Bureaucratic oversight, making them no different from overregulated public schools.
Instead of ensuring true educational freedom, school choice legislation will end up forcing private schools and homeschools into the same bureaucratic system that public schools are struggling under today.
3️⃣ Who Profits from “Choice” Policies?
While parents are promised more options, the biggest winners in “school choice” policies are often private corporations, testing companies, and education management organizations (EMOs)—not students.
•Unregulated ESD programs have led to fraud, with millions of taxpayer dollars funneled into low-performing or even nonexistent schools in other states.
•Testing and curriculum companies benefit from new mandates that force private schools to conform to state standards.
Rather than empowering parents, these policies risk turning education into a profit-driven industry where accountability is an afterthought.
4️⃣ No Recourse for Parents

@KATUNews Love to hear it. Declining enrollment is a good thing. Public schools are scams. I meet families daily that are happier in microschools, private, charter, online, or homeschooling. Better options, safer, affordable, and just overall more successful.

There are two main reasons for this.
1) the longstanding right-wing hostility to anti-poverty programs
