#DRDO has achieved a major milestone in India’s #hypersonic missile development by successfully conducting an extensive long-duration test of its Actively Cooled Full-Scale #Scramjet Combustor. The test achieved a run-time of over 1,200 seconds at the Scramjet Connect Pipe Test Facility in Hyderabad on May 9, 2026, building on the earlier successful 700-second test conducted in January this year. This marks a major step toward sustained scramjet-powered hypersonic missile propulsion.

Almost exactly three years ago, the DARPA/USAF #HAWC program crossed its final finish line. The Lockheed vehicle and its Aerojet #scramjet engine nailed their final flight test objective. DARPA tasked two separate teams with maturing two distinct airframe and scramjet engine architectures. In a rare feat for such high-risk technology, both teams emerged with flying colors.
Walter Price, the USAF deputy on the HAWC program, called the effort the "most successful hypersonic air breathing flight test program in 🇺🇸 history."
Launched following the 2013 final flight of the scramjet X-51 Waverider, HAWC achieved its first successful hypersonic flight in 2021. Upon its completion, the USAF rapidly transitioned to the HACM cruise missile (now with Raytheon/Northrop Grumman) program while DARPA pushed further into research with MoHAWC.
The reality of 2026 shows just how much of a marathon this is. While the Army's Dark Eagle is finally hitting operational units, air breathing systems like HACM are still grinding through a tightened flight test schedule expected to begin this year for fielding as early as 2027. The US Air Force plans to begin flight testing of the #Scramjet powered Hypersonic Attack Cruise Missile #HACM this year for a rapid fielding in the second half of next year. Building on the highly successful Hypersonic Air-breathing Weapon Concept (HAWC) program that incorporated what Steve Walker (DARPA) called the "3rd generation" scramjet engine, HACM will the first hypersonic weapon the Air Force fields on tactical fighters with USAF F-15E and RAAF F/A-18E/F being threshold platforms.

In a major technological breakthrough; Hyderabad-based DRDL ( a #DRDO lab) has successfully conducted a 12+ minute long-duration ground test of a full-scale, actively cooled #SCRAMJET combustor at its SCPT facility, significantly strengthening India’s #Hypersonic Cruise #Missile programme. The scramjet engine is designed to power hypersonic cruise missiles capable of flying at speeds over five times the speed of sound.
In simple terms #RAMJET engine uses ram effect for compression (using vehicles own speed for first stage compression) - but in this case combustion happens at subsonic speed. Result vehicle speed is supersonic.
In SCRAMJET (Supersonic Combustion RAMJET) the combustion happens at supersonic speeds. The technology gives hypersonic speed to vehicles.
We are one more step closer for our own SCRAMJET engines and hypersonic missiles/vehicles.
